‘Anti-Rape’ Underwear Developed By Engineering Students

“Anti-rape” underwear developed by engineering students from India supposedly thwarts attackers who try to touch a woman’s breasts. The SRM University in Chennai students named the camisole style underwear Society Harnessing Equipment, or SHE.

The anti-rape underwear is just a prototype for now, but the college students hope to offer finalized versions for sale commercially. The underwear is reportedly equipped with global system for mobile communications (GSM) and global positioning system (GPS) pressure sensors. The sensors in the bosom of the camisole are supposedly capable of issuing 3,800 KV shock waves.

The anti-rape underwear sensors also send an alert to police officers and parents, according to Manisha Mohan, one of the developers of the high-tech personal wear. The Society Harnessing Equipment is reportedly capable of sending shock waves up to 82 times.

Manisha Mohan had this to say about the anti-rape underwear:

“A person trying to molest a girl will get the shock of his life the moment pressure sensors get activated, and the GPS and GSM modules would send an SMS on emergency to number 100, as well as to the parents of the girl.”

The pressure sensor shock circuit was placed in the bosom section of the anti-rape underwear because rapists or “roadside eve-teasing” typically involves a female being first touched in the breast area. The engineering students are working together with the National Institute of Fashion Technology to determine the best fabric for the rape deterrent camisole. The designers reportedly need to find a fabric that can be washed without ruining the electronic-laden underwear.

During an interview with a local paper, the engineering students who developed the anti-rape underwear credited their experiences after leaving the sheltered world of a convent girls school as their design inspiration. The students stated that, since it takes officials “ages’ to craft laws to help make women safe, they came up with their own self-defense project. The students hope that the anti-rape underwear will one day protect women from social, domestic, and workplace harassment.
