Magic Johnson’s son has decided to go public with his romance, and his parents couldn’t be more proud.
Earvin Johnson III stepped out holding hands with his unidentified boyfriend on L.A.’s Sunset Strip Monday night, reports TMZ . Earvin, one of Magic’s three children, was apparently open about his sexuality prior to the sighting, but this marked the first time that he and his boyfriend were seen together publicly.
Magic and his wife, Earlitha “Cookie” Kelly, reportedly couldn’t be more proud of Earvin, also called EJ. He’s a 20-year-old student at New York University, and has all the support he could want from his parents.
“Cookie and I love EJ and support him in every way,” Magic said. “We’re very proud of him.”
Rumors about Magic’s own sexuality came up in 1991, when he revealed that he was HIV-positive. Instead of backing away from the issue, Magic has parlayed his fame into spreading awareness and tolerance of people living with HIV or AIDS.
Magic has also been a champion for gay rights , having opposed California’s Prop 8 back in 2008. The clause, which banned same-sex marriages in the state, prompted Magic to record a telephone message sent to California voters.
“Prop 8 singles out one group of Californians to be treated differently — including members of our family, our friends, and our coworkers,” the message said. “That is not what California is about. So this Tuesday, vote no on Proposition 8 . It is unfair and wrong. Thanks.”
