Texas DA Killed Two Months After His Assistant Was Murdered Outside Courthouse

Texas district attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were both found killed in their home in Kaufman County, Texas this weekend. The death of the DA comes just two months after he promised to put away the “scum” who had killed one of his top deputies.

Officials are worried that the newest death may be part of a larger attempt to target criminal justices.

Kaufman city Mayor William Fortner says police are now taking “extra precautions” to ensure no one else is targeted. Fortner adds:

“I don’t know of anyone who would want to cause him harm. As far as I could tell, he was doing a really good job as a district attorney. We lost some important people, and we hope the killers are caught before any more people are lost.”

Speaking to the Dallas Morning News, police say the couple’s door was kicked in and “there are shell casings everywhere.”

Police at this time have not named a suspect in the murder of McLelland and his wife. Currently helping with the investigation is the FBI and the Texas Rangers.

McLelland, an Army veteran, earned his masters in psychology and eventually worked as a psychologist for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. The Army vet later earned his law degree and worked as a defense attorney and mental health judge for 18 years before joining the Texas District Attorney’s office in 2010.

The Texas DA was killed almost exactly two months after his assistant district attorney, Mark Hasse, was shot down in broad daylight outside the country courthouse on January 31.

Before his death, Hasse had started carrying a gun to work. Hasse never told his co-workers why he feared for his life, only that he didn’t feel safe.

Mike McLelland had promised to bring his assistant DA’s murdered to justice, telling reporters:

“I hope that the people that did this are watching, because we’re very confident that we’re going to find you. We’re going to pull you out of whatever hole you’re in, we’re going to bring you back and let the people of Kaufman County prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”

Police are asking anyone with leads to phone their local law enforcement agency.
