‘Godzilla’ Remake Could Add David Strathairn

The Godzilla remake could add veteran actor David Strathairn to the cast.

Strathairn is the latest acclaimed actor to consider signing on for director Gareth Edwards’ version of the Godzilla franchise. The Good Night and Good Luck star will reportedly join Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen in the film.

Previous reports indicated that award-winning actress Juliette Binoche was considering a role in the upcoming remake. However, nothing about this particular rumor has been confirmed or denied as of this writing.

David Strathairn will tackle a military role in the remake should he decide to make everything official.

Unlike Roland Emmerich’s 1998 version of the iconic movie monster, Gareth Edwards intends to treat the creature and the scenario very seriously. The director said during an interview with Total Film that he wanted the story to be more realistic and grounded than previous efforts.

“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him,” Edwards explained. “I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine, ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.”

Edwards said that fan “reaction has been amazing, and I can’t wait for the fans to see our final product.”

The Godzilla remake was written by David Callaham (The Expendables 2), David Goyer (The Dark Knight Rises), and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). British playwright Drew Pearce was reportedly hired last October to rewrite the script.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures reportedly brought in The Shawshank Redemption screenwriter Frank Darabont to give the script a bit of polish prior to production. The acclaimed writer also had a hand in bringing The Green Mile and the hit series The Walking Dead to life.

Unless the release date changes again between now and then, Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla remake will land in theaters across the US on May 16, 2014.
