CBS Gives Pilot Order To Hilary Winston’s ‘Bad Teacher’

CBS has given a pilot order to Hilary Winston’s comedy, Bad Teacher.

Adapted from the 2011 film starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, and Justin Timberlake, Bad Teacher will be a single-camera comedy written by Winston and produced by the film’s writers-producers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. The trio will executive produce the series, which will be produced by Sony Pictures TV.

According to Deadline, the Bad Teacher pickup increases the number of single-camera comedy pilots on CBS to five, versus three multi-camera pilots. Bad Teacher is the second pilot for Hilary Winston, who also had Girls on Film picked up by NBC.

For Stupnitsky and Eisenberg, Bad Teacher is their third broadcast pilot. The duo also has Pulling and Trophy Wife at ABC, as well as Hello Ladies at HBO.

As we previously reported, reception to a Bad Teacher series was lukewarm at best, with many lamenting that studios have stopped coming up with original ideas. Winston, however, reassured one naysayer that the series had a different concept than the film. Of course, Diaz, Segel, and Timberlake won’t be returning for the series, and so far there has been no word about casting.

CBS has also ordered a pilot for The Advocates, a legal drama written and executive produced by Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist). The series focuses on a female lawyer and male ex-con who join forces as “victim advocates.” The series will be produced by Warner Bros TV, which also produces The Mentalist.
