Hornets’ New Nickname, Team Colors, To Be Unveiled This Week

The Pelicans will soon be joining the NBA. The New Orleans Hornets are expected to reveal their new nickname, as well as their new team colors, this Thursday during a news conference.

According to the Times-Picayune, the New Orleans’ Hornets new nickname will be officially unveiled during a news conference on Thursday at 3 p.m. EST.

The Hornets’ new nickname has been known for months but the team hasn’t made an official announcement yet. UPI notes that the Pelican is the state bird of Louisiana. Team owner Tom Benson also owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname.

As for team colors, the Pelicans are expected to dress in blue, gold and red. The new nickname, color and logo will be used during the 2013-14 season.

The team’s new name and the team’s new colors won’t be much of a surprise tomorrow but the new Pelican logo has not been seen yet.

Sports Illustrated notes that the name the “New Orleans Pelicans” was used during the 80s by a minor league baseball team. The baseball logo was a, more or less, natural looking bird.

According to The Score, the New Orleans Pelicans NBA team might be going in a slightly different direction. Here’s one proposed version of the logo.
