Mike McCoy Rumors: Broncos Offensive Coordinator Drawing Interest From Several Teams

The Mike McCoy rumors are starting to heat up now that the Denver Broncos are headed home from the playoffs, with the team’s offensive coordinator likely to land a head coaching job of his own.

Now that his season is over, he is free to meet with teams without Denver’s permission, and McCoy is set to interview for the San Diego Chargers opening. McCoy has already met with the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles about their coaching vacancies, CBS Sports noted.

The Mike McCoy rumors also place the hot assistant coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he is expected to get an interview.

Nearly all of the teams McCoy has interviewed or will interview with have a common denominator — question marks at quarterback. While at Denver, McCoy got a reputation for being able to mold quarterbacks. Last season he led the unconventional Tim Tebow to a strong performance and a playoff win, and this year he helped Peyton Manning to a strong comeback season after missing 2011 with a neck injury.

Mike McCoy rumors aren’t just limited to teams he’s visiting. As NBC Sports noted, the Broncos have started rumors of their own as they search for a replacement to the likely departing McCoy.

The report notes:

“So who will replace McCoy?

“According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the candidates include younger-than-Peyton Broncos quarterback coach Adam Gase (son-in-law of Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt), former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, and Colts quarterbacks coach (and former offensive coordinator) Clyde Christensen.

“At some point recently, someone suggested that former Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore could land in Denver.

“At some point (or at every point), it doesn’t matter. Manning will continue to run the show, as long as he’s the Broncos’ quarterback. While it helps to have a great offensive coordinator, there’s no substitute for having a player-coach on the field.”

With his season now over, the Mike McCoy rumors aren’t likely to last long. Experts think he’ll be selected for one of the head coaching vacancies in short time.
