For months, the feud between Tyrese Gibson and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been affecting production on Fast and Furious 9. In a new Instagram rant, Gibson is now claiming he will not appear in the film if Johnson is officially cast.
The tension between the stars began back in September when Gibson pleaded with Johnson to not appear in a Fast and Furious spinoff, which would delay the production of Fast and Furious 9. Gibson commented, “#FastFamily is just that a family……..We don’t fly solo,” on one of Johnson’s Instagram posts, which was later deleted.
The spinoff causing all the drama, Hobbs and Shaw, was confirmed, and Johnson shared the news on social media. The new project is set to detail the life of Johnson’s character, alongside fellow Fast and Furious alum Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw.
This news bumped back the release of Fast and Furious 9 from 2019 to 2020, which Vin Diesel confirmed on his Instagram page. Diesel claims the delay was no one’s fault, but it seems Gibson had a different opinion on the matter.
Now, Gibson is claiming his character, Roman Pierce, will not appear in Fast and Furious 9 if Johnson is cast. The spiteful Instagram post throws shade at the Baywatch star by hinting that the Fast Universe is his and his longtime co-stars, not Johnson’s. Gibson even went as far to claim Johnson’s selfishness has messed with his family.
“You mess with my family and my daughter’s survival I mess with yours.”
Screen Rant notes that Gibson was offered a spinoff of his own alongside Ludacris, but they turned down the idea.
Gibson also hinted that Johnson uses “juice” for his bulked up exterior and isn’t a real man who bulks up naturally. Johnson has not responded to Gibson’s post, but he hasn’t been shy about firing back in the past.
Michelle Rodriguez might also be sitting out Fast and Furious 9, as she threatened to leave the franchise earlier this year. Rodriguez shared an Instagram post with several photos from her time with Fast and Furious and claimed she might have to leave the family if the women in the movies were not shown more love.
Hobbs and Shaw and Fast and Furious 9 are still in early talks, with no release dates yet. Gibson’s full rant can be found here.
