Massive N.Y. Pileup Leaves One Dead, At Least 30 Injured

A massive pileup in New York has left one person dead and at least 30 more injured.

According to local police, the accident occurred at about 3 pm on the eastbound side of the highway. Dozens of vehicles were scattered across the Long Island Expressway in Shirley and several of the vehicles were on fire.

The Associated Press reports that the massive N.Y. pileup was caused by a tractor-trailer that crashed into several cars on the Long Island Expressway. The accident caused a chain reaction that left one person dead and 32 injured. At least two of the people injured were listed in serious condition.

John Mirando, the chief of the Ridge Fire Department, said that he was surprised that there was only one fatality during the crash.

Mirando told the Miami Herald:

“Anybody rolling up on this scene you would think there would be definitely more than just one fatality … It’s just lucky that it’s only one, but it could have been a lot worse.”

Police are currently investigating the exact cause of the incident. Authorities did not identify the person who died in the crash but did say that it was not the driver of the tractor-trailer.

This is the third major traffic accident this week. A 60 care pileup closed an interstate in California today and a 100 car pileup in Texas left two people dead earlier this week.
