Sandra Bernhard Cut from Benefit After Palin Gang-Rape Joke

A women’s shelter cut Sandra Bernhard as a headliner after she unleased a Sarah Palin joke deemed “combative” and “digusting.” During her one-woman show last month, Berhard said that the Republican Vice-Presidential Candidate would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” when discussing her stance on abortion.

The Boston women’s shelter director Leemarie Mosca commented that “In light of our mission, we don’t think violence against women is a laughing matter,” and said that she was seeking a replacement for the October 16th event.

Berhard explained on her website that the joke is part of a bigger picture: “racism, freedom, women’s rights, and the extreme views of Gov. Sarah Palin – a woman who doesn’t believe that other women should have the right to choose.” She also challenged Palin to “explain to me how she can hold such outrageous views” and then to “go back to Alaska.”

If nothing else, Bernhard’s jokes are a sign of how anxiously we’re watching political developments, and how deeply they affect us. Don’t forget to watch the Biden/Palin debate tonight– I’ll be camping out with my popcorn.
