Study: Watching Online Porn May Affect Your Memory
A new study suggests watching online porn may affect your short-term memory, according to MSN.
Those who spend a large amount of time viewing internet pornography could experience some issues with their working memory. A recent German study points the wagging finger of blame at porn for the memory loss reported by its subjects.
According to LiveScience, study author Christian Laier said porn aficionados are likely to miss important events in their life as a result of watching arousing videos online.
“Sexual arousal interferes with working memory, an important facet of executive functioning,” Laier explained. “Sexual arousal and its impacts on cognitive processes might explain parts of these negative effects.”
After studying 28 heterosexual males with an average age of 26, researchers discovered that looking at pornography can have a negative effect on an individual’s short-term memory. However, it’s currently believed pornography won’t entirely destroy one’s brain; the effects only tend to last while the person is actually looking at the content in question.
According to Medical Daily, the study didn’t state whether the effects of porn on gay men or women.
In other to gather their data, researchers subjected 28 straight men to a series of images. Some of the guys received naughty photos, while others were given something much more innocent. The participants were then asked to answer a handful of questions on a computer touch screen.
Those individuals who were given a collection of pornography to gawk at were less accurate than those who received G-rated pictures. The inaccuracy increased further when volunteers were sexually aroused by the images they were looking at.
Cosmopolitan explains the point of the study was to determine why sex addiction causes disruption in a person’s daily life. However, more research is needed in order to paint a clearer picture.
