‘Top Gun’ Headed To IMAX 3D Theaters Next Year

The Tom Cruise 80s classic Top Gun is headed to a giant screen near you.

According to the folks at Cinema Blend, director Tony Scott’s beloved 1986 drama is getting the IMAX 3D treatment ahead of its official Blu-ray release. Fans will be able to catch the jet fighter-related antics of Maverick and company this February.

For six whole days, hardcore fans of the film will be able to relive all of their favorite moments on IMAX’s enormous movie screens. The studio is hoping the remastered version will work some nostalgic hoodoo on your pocketbook; the Blu-ray edition of Top Gun drops a little over a week later.

From the Paramount Pictures’ official press release:

” ‘Top Gun’ was re-mastered for the big screen from high-resolution original negative scans and painstakingly converted to 3D by Legend3D under the supervision of the film’s director, Tony Scott. Rendered in 3D, the film’s complex, long shots reveal extraordinary depth and clarity, allowing viewers to explore every detail of the action. From the spectacular aerial dogfights to the intense close-ups in the cockpits, each frame enables the audience to feel a part of the story.”

In other words, this thing is going to look phenomenal.

Slash Film reports that Top Gun will begin its exclusive IMAX 3D engagement on February 8, 2013. The two-disc Blu-ray edition of the flick is slated to hit retail shelves on February 19, 2013.

Although the new home video edition of the movie is sure to be packed with all sorts of special features, it probably won’t be nearly as cool as the DVD set designed to resemble Maverick’s jacket.

Starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan, the film was a huge hit for producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. Not only did Top Gun make around $350 million at the box office, it also helped launch the career of Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise.
