’50 Shades Of Grey’ Trilogy Drops To $5 On Amazon

Ready to spruce up your love life just in time for the holidays? Amazon on Monday announced major price cuts for the uber-popular 50 Shades Of Grey trilogy. The trilogy, which normally sells for $27.75 via the online portal’s digital books platform, can now be picked up for just $4.99. The offer is for a very limited time and ends at 4 pm ET.

Amazon is limiting the purchase to one per customer, and, given that the paperbacks sell for $47.85 for the full set, the price may be too good to pass up.

The first book in the series has remained on the New York Times best seller list for 38 weeks and has been so popular that Markus Dohle, CEO of publisher Random House, gave every single employee in his company a $5,000 year-end bonus. The book’s author, E.L. James, was believed to be earning $1 million per week at the height of the book’s success.

50 Shades Of Grey follows the sexually explicit relationship between an older businessman and a college student.

The current Amazon pricing is part of the company’s “12 days of deals” promotion that runs from December 3 through December 14. Available during the promotion are various book types including fantasy novels, cookbooks, and other popular works.

By offering books and other products below cost, Amazon has managed to bring in new customers who may have strayed away from online commerce. On the other hand, Amazon has to hope that its “loss leader” products will eventually turn a profit for the online shopping giant in the future.
