‘The Grand Tour’ Season 2: James May Confirms October Release Date

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May made their Amazon Prime Video debut with the release of the first season of The Grand Tour last year. Following the success of that first season, the trio are set to return to the streaming service for a second and third season in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

According to Digital Spy, host James May has now confirmed that the aforementioned second season of The Grand Tour will hit the streaming service in October, with producers said to be putting the “finishing touches” on the upcoming season.

May was appearing on The One Show in the United Kingdom on Monday when he was questioned about when The Grand Tour will return for its second season. He revealed that new episodes are expected to be available from October, which is considerably earlier than the show’s first season, which premiered in November last year.

“October is when you’ll first be able to see it,” he replied when quizzed about the show’s second season release date. “But after that, you’ll be able to see it whenever you want, of course. I’m told to say that!”

In the interview, May was also asked about the budget for the upcoming season, especially considering according to the Telegraph, the record budget spent on the first season, which Amazon splashed out over £160 million for.

“As little as possible,” May joked. “No, it’s about the same, I would think. It is quite an expensive show to make.”

“There’s a lot of travel involved. There’s a lot of crew involved. There’s a lot of tech involved, filming in 4K. But that’s boring stuff. It’s going to look largely the same, but we’ve moved it on a bit in a way that I can’t really tell you about yet because you’re the enemy and it’s secret,” he said, suggesting that some changes will be made from the format of the aforementioned first season.

Amazon struck a deal with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May, and producer Andy Wilman following their departure from the BBC series Top Gear in 2015. In the deal with Amazon, the four initially agreed to produce a total of 36 episodes over the course of three years, with 13 of those episodes airing between November 2016 and February 2017.

The first season of The Grand Tour followed a fairly similar format to that of its predecessor Top Gear. That said, the new series took the trio to various locations from the California desert to South Africa, the Netherlands, Namibia and back home to the UK.

That said, there was doubt cast over the second season of The Grand Tour back in March when it was reported that Richard Hammond had been badly hurt in a motorcycle accident whilst filming for the upcoming season.

“It’s true, I did fall off a motorbike whilst filming recently for The Grand Tour in Mozambique. I banged my head, yes, along with pretty much everything else apart from my left thumb, which remains unbruised,” Hammond said. “Can’t tell you more yet about the how and why of it. As for injuries; well put it this way, I don’t think I can get a book out of it.”

The Grand Tour’s second season, which will star Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, is expected to air on Amazon Prime Video in October this year, one month earlier than the premiere of the show’s first season.
