Pit Bull Kills 90-Year-Old Woman In Virginia Beach Hours After Daughter Pays $20 For It On Craigslist

A pit bull mauled a 90-year-old woman to death just hours after her daughter bought the dog for $20 from a Craigslist ad from Forever Home Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Beach.

First responders rushed to the home of Margaret M. Colvin after she was attacked by the adopted 50-pound pit bull on Wednesday evening. The 90-year-old woman was rushed to a local hospital with multiple serious injuries. Margaret Colvin was pronounced dead during the early morning hours on Thursday, according to WVEC.

The 1-year-old pit bull was purchased by the victim’s daughter, who was identified only as “Linda” in local news reports. The pit bull named “Blue” was playing in the backyard of its new home with Linda when Margaret yelled for help after falling inside the home, according to the Daily Mail.

When Linda rushed to her mother’s aid, the adopted pit bull followed quickly behind. Once inside the home the dog rushed past its new owner and started biting her 90-year-old mother. According to the shocked daughter, the pit bull straddled her mother’s back and bit her neck, shoulders, legs, and stomach.

Linda grabbed a hammer and started hitting the pit bull in a futile attempt to get the dog to stop biting her mother. The dog refused to comply and kept brutally mauling the elderly woman.

Amber Patterson, the victim’s granddaughter, said the pit bull mauling lasted about five minutes and was both bloody and gruesome. According to Patterson’s comments to local reporters, the pit bull pushed her grandmother over and attacked her as she was walking into her bedroom. The adopted dog did not stop attacking the 90-year-old woman until Colvin stopped crying and screaming, according to Patterson.

Linda told local reporters her mother underwent multiple surgeries on Wednesday evening, including a procedure to have one of her arms amputated. She wants the pit bull to be euthanized. Virginia Beach Animal Control officers took the dog from the home after the fatal attack and put it into quarantine. No determination about the future of the adopted pit bull has yet been made by the authorities.

A statement from the Forever Home Rehabilitation Center after the adopted pit bull mauled the 90-year-old woman to death said no one at the facility “could have ever predicted this horrible event.” The statement from the dog rescue also maintained Blue had never before shown any type of aggression and passed his training and final evaluation before being put up for adoption.

“I can’t believe it happened. I am still in shock” a neighbor of Margaret Colvin, Lydia Walther, said during an interview with KFVS News. “If she got killed by an animal, it just makes me feel that it could happen to any of the kids around the house. We do have dogs ourselves.”

Lydia Walther said she knew Margaret Colvin for 15 years. She described her elderly neighbor as being incredibly nice, very independent, and active. According to Walther, the pit bull attack victim went outside every day for exercise with her walker.

“It’s just really sad,” another neighbor, Sondra Smith, said.

Smith added that she saw Colvin outside frequently with her elderly dog and used to bring her tomatoes.

The victim’s granddaughter said the family was permitted to see and interact with the American Pit Bull Terrier at the Forever Home Rehabilitation Center prior to adopting the dog. Patterson said Blue seemed like a good fit for the family and they were happy to take him home. The fatal dog mauling happened not long after the shock collar the pit bull was wearing was removed from his neck.
