Brock Lesnar Backstage Plans Revealed Through ‘Great Balls Of Fire’ Pay-Per-View

This Sunday night, five men will fight for the chance to challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship at the Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view in Dallas in July. Dave Meltzer was on Wrestling Observer Radio this week and revealed that the winner of that match will only have a short program with Brock Lesnar before the WWE moves on to the next challenge.

There have been strong signs that Finn Balor, Samoa Joe, and Bray Wyatt are contenders for this big WWE pay-per-view match while both Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns will face Brock Lesnar down the line. There were also some rumors that started spreading today that claimed Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar would face off this summer, but those rumors are completely false.

The plans are still in place for Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns to remain apart until WrestleMania 34. The story there is simple as both men beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania events — the only two WWE superstars to ever accomplish that. Having them battle at WrestleMania 34 will allow the WWE to crown one of them as the big dog of WrestleMania.

According to Dave Meltzer, the WWE will only have the winner of Extreme Rules work a short one-month feud with Brock Lesnar and then end the angle after Brock Lesnar beats them at Great Balls of Fire. There will be no rematch. That makes it sound like Finn Balor won’t be the man in the match as the WWE wants to push him back to the top once again. Losing to Brock Lesnar now would likely stall that push.

The biggest rumor right now is that Bray Wyatt will win at Extreme Rules. Brock Lesnar is scheduled for three Monday Night Raw shows leading into Great Balls of Fire, and one of them is advertising Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt for the WWE Universal Championship. That match will almost surely be a dark match since Brock Lesnar has not wrestled on free television since he returned in 2012.

There is also the possibility that Samoa Joe will win, and the Bray Wyatt title match is just a way to give Brock Lesnar two defenses: one in front of only a live crowd and the second at Great Balls of Fire in July.

Now, the biggest rumors concerning the WWE this summer involves huge feuds that the company will promote to try to raise their lagging ratings once again. This past Monday night’s episode of Monday Night Raw only drew 2.6 million viewers, making it the lowest-watched episode of Raw in 2017. The bad news is that there was no NBA game to compete with, meaning people just didn’t tune in.

Two of the rumored big summer feuds will be Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman for the WWE Universal Championship, which will take place at SummerSlam, and Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns in a huge feud between the two former members of The Shield. Some experts have speculated that the Reigns vs. Rollins feud will result in the reuniting of The Shield before WrestleMania 34.

As for the sagging ratings, John Cena is coming back to SmackDown Live in July and Brock Lesnar will be back on Monday Night Raw starting in June. Those are the two missing WWE superstars that most people have blamed for the low ratings.

Brock Lesnar is scheduled for the June 12 episode of Raw in Lafayette, Louisiana, and the June 26 episode at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California. That Louisiana show is where Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt is being advertised. Brock Lesnar is also booked for the July 3 show in Phoenix, Arizona, which is the final show before Great Balls of Fire in Dallas.

Brock Lesnar is also booked for the July 10 Raw in Houston the night after Great Balls of Fire, which is where Braun Strowman is rumored to make his WWE return.
