Jason Babin Clears Wires After Being Cut By Eagles, Many Teams Interested

Jason Babin has cleared waiver wires after his surprise cut from the Philadelphia Eagles, but the defensive end may not be without a team for long.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the Lions are interested in Babin, thought the team didn’t want to pick him up over wires. Any team that claims Babin on the waiver wire would have to pay the remainder of his $5.575-million contract for this year, of which about $1.8 million remains.

Though the Lions could use the pass-rushing defensive end, the team doesn’t have the cap space to bring him in.

Many around the NFL were surprised when the Eagles cut Jason Babin, who last year had 18 sacks and through 11 games this year had 5 1/2. The Eagles have suffered seven straight losses however, and soon-to-be-fired coach Andy Reid had said publicly that no player’s job is safe.

Though Detroit may have been the top of the list for consideration, there is speculation of Jason Babin joining other teams. Pat Yasinskas, a blogger with ESPN, says that a few teams in the NFC South could use Babin’s contributions, especially the New Orleans Saints.

Jason Babin could also find his way to the New England Patriots, WEEI in Boston speculates. The Patriots are 21st in the league with 23 sacks, and Babin could bloom under New England coach Bill Belichick. The report notes that Babin would need to clear waiver wires for the Patriots to be truly interested, but, now that it seems he has, New England could step up its efforts to bring in the pass rusher.
