Tampa Bay Buccaneers make QB change

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Raheem Morris has decided to make a change at the quarter back position. Starter Byron Leftwich will be replaced by second year player Josh Johnson and rookie QB Josh Freeman will be his back up. That knocks Leftwich down to the third position of the depth chart, and the Bucs are looking for a move to help save their season. In all reality though the Bucs organization may have made a huge mistake is firing Coach John Gruden after last year.

This was not a surprising move since the Buccaneers offense has not exactly been great so far in 2009. After getting shut out by the New York Giants and gaining a pathetic 86 yard on offense a change was defiantly needed. However the Bucs offense was averaging 401.5 yards and 20.5 per game. Those are ok numbers, but at 0-3 and after getting embarrassed by the Giants Morris felt the need to make the move.

Now why Morris chose to drop Leftwich to third on the depth chart is somewhat of a mystery. It may be a signal that the team, front office, and coaching staff never really believed in Leftwich. If that is true one has to wonder why Leftwich was given the starting job in the first place.

In the end this is a team struggling to find an identity, struggling to rebuild in the wake of Gruden’s firing. It seems the front office made a hasty decision in that firing, and Morris has shown nothing to prove he is up for the job.
