As stated in the tweet above, The Amazing Race Season 29 is set to return to screens on April 21, 2017. Unfortunately, that does mean The Amazing Race fans still have a few months to wait before they get to enjoy the series.
Perhaps the bigger snafu The Amazing Race fans have with the announcement of the Season 29 release date is that it doesn’t line up with the series history. Anyone who loyally follows The Amazing Race knows this is a series that has always aired two seasons each year.
Season 28 of The Amazing Race premiered on February 12, 2016. This means the premiere date of The Amazing Race Season 29 will be a little more than a year after The Amazing Race Season 28 premiered.
The Amazing Race fan base first started to get riled up when CBS made the decision to remove the reality television show from the Fall 2016 lineup. CBS never made it clear as to why the reality television show was pulled. As a response, the fan base of the series started to become anxious and question whether the series would be canceled soon. The official announcement the network made regarding Season 29 — which did put some fans at ease for the time being — can be seen below.
“The multi-Emmy Award-winning reality series The Amazing Race returns on Friday, April 21 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT), with a two-hour premiere one week after the season finale of MacGyver, then moving to its regular Friday (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) time period on April 28.”
While CBS has done a fairly good job of not disclosing any details regarding Season 29, there have been a few leaks and spoilers over what Season 29 may or may not entail. Per Reality Blurred, CBS has managed to find a way to keep things nice and interesting as the series enters Season 29. This reality-television-themed website claims each of the teams for Season 29 will be selected using a schoolyard pick. How the schoolyard pick ends up working out will depend on the results of an event that takes place before the race officially begins.
Reality Blurred goes on to reveal that the pre-race event is a fairly simple task requiring each of the participants to collect a flag located at the F&M Gallery which was estimated to be a little shy of two miles away from the Grand Hope Park in Los Angeles where The Amazing Race would officially start. Basically, the first participant who returned with the first flag got to choose who he (or she) wanted to partner up with during The Amazing Race Season 29. This continued until there were 11 teams with two people on each team.
While the cast for Season 29 has yet to be revealed, Reality Blurred also reported that the teams appeared to be pretty even in terms of males and females. It also appeared as if a lot of the teams were mixed in gender.
Will any of the participants know each other this year or will this be 22 strangers being split up onto 11 teams based on the pre-race event and the schoolyard pick? Is it possible there could be more than 22 people competing for one of the spots on the 11 teams? More importantly, how well will these 11 teams of strangers perform on The Amazing Race Season 29? Will being paired up with a stranger make it easier or harder to compete in this reality television show? Will there be any showmances?
