Rumors of a One Direction reunion kicked into overdrive when Niall Horan and former member Zayn Malik shook hands at last night’s American Music Awards. Meanwhile, fellow bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne were not in attendance.
Niall and Zayn were both at the AMAs for reasons related to their solo music careers. Niall, who has used the One Direction hiatus to write new music, performed his debut single “This Town,” and Zayn was there to support his girlfriend and AMAs host Gigi Hadid. He was also there because he won the award for Best New Artist.
While Zayn and Niall did not interact live on the air, a One Direction fan in the AMAs audience caught the two of them having the briefest of interactions. As Niall and crew walked past Zayn’s seat, he quickly reached out and exclaimed “bro!” before shaking Zayn’s hand, leaving him looking spooked and a bit flustered. Radio1D, a One Direction Twitter update account, posted a video of the interaction.
Fans immediately reacted to the mini One Direction reunion, with many praising Niall for what they perceived to be him taking the moral high road and not ignoring Zayn. Zayn’s started facial expression also inspired plenty of jokes within the Twitter and Tumblr One Direction accounts, as he does not often lose his cool.
Many fans got emotional over the interaction, as they had not seen the two One Direction performers together since March of 2015, before Zayn left the group. While Zayn may not be in the best standing with One Direction members or fans, the interaction certainly brought back memories.
Unfortunately for those hoping for a One Direction reunion in a more official capacity, Zayn’s acceptance speech was not very generous towards Liam, Harry, Niall, and Louis. Soon after Niall shook his hand, Zayn accepted the award for Best New Artist, and dropped a quick reference to his One Direction past in his speech.
“Wow… This one just has my name on it, right?”
Some One Direction fans called the moment shady and thought that Zayn was dwelling too much on the past.
In other One Direction news, Niall’s bandmate Louis Tomlinson has headed off to Las Vegas to party with superstar DJ Steve Aoki. Louis and Aoki both plastered images of the trip all over their social media accounts and seemed to have a great trip planned. Pictures showed the two on private planes and celebrating in bars, and Louis enjoyed one of Steve Aoki’s shows as an audience member.
While Niall and Liam have used the One Direction hiatus to work on solo music of their own, Louis has been busy collaborating with other artists and using the break to do a bit of partying. It is unknown whether he plans to do any solo recording, but he has not signed a solo record deal the way his bandmates Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles all have done.
According to Sugarscape, Louis’ interests lie in music production and publishing, and Tomlinson started his own record label last year.
Louis also took the time last week to send his love to his mother in an Instagram post, captioning it “I love you and miss you so much!”
With Harry Styles still staying under the radar and not posting on social media, that leaves just one One Direction member left to update on: Liam Payne. Liam, who has also been teasing a solo career lately with snippets of music posted to his Instagram account, is most likely to be in the tabloids because of his relationship with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (previously Cole), a British pop singer.
The Irish Independent reported on Cheryl’s recent interview with Fabulous magazine, in which the singer gushed that “I am happier than I’ve ever been before. Now is a very good time in my life.”
Cheryl has faced criticism for dating Liam from One Direction fans due to the decade-long age gap between the two: Cheryl is 33, and Liam is 23. The pair met when Liam was only 14 and a contestant on The X-Factor, a televised talent show that Cheryl was judging.
Though Cheryl acknowledged these setbacks, she also shared some motivational words for herself and for others.
“I learned to be less apologetic and not to give a s*** about what people say. I think you just focus on what is right for you and you learn to trust your own instincts and follow them.”
As per usual, this past week has seen quite a lot of One Direction news, with Zayn and Niall reuniting at the AMAs, Liam and Cheryl’s relationship continuing to blossom, and Louis taking a much-deserved vacation.
