‘This Is Us’ Star Chrissy Metz Discusses ‘Ego’ Side Of Show’s Weight Loss Contract, Childhood Journey With Weight Watchers

This is Us actress Chrissy Metz recently shared a positive perspective of her contractual obligation to lose weight.

The concept of a contract being attached to her weight loss journey may have sparked backlash on social media, but the 37-year-old actress made it clear in a recent interview that it is her personal decision.

“I just have to be very clear, whether or not I lose weight or stay the same, it’s purely a choice of mine for health. Not because I think that plus size, curvy, voluptuous, big bodies aren’t attractive – because I think they’re awesome and sexy.”

Metz further explained that she is not “selling out the big girls.” Why, then, did she agree to the terms of this reported contract in the first place? Chrissy stated in the interview that she felt as if the opportunity was a “win-win” situation for her because she essentially got an added boost of support by no longer having to lose the weight for herself.

“It’s one thing to try to do it on your own. But as human beings, it’s an ego thing: We’re more likely to do something for someone else.”

Back in October, Metz opened up to People magazine about her childhood weight loss journey – including the fact that she attend Weight Watchers meetings with her mother at the age of 11-years-old. Metz stated that her mother was “just trying to figure it out for me.” However, she also shared the sad and “heartbreaking” side of the situation of a parent wanting their child to “have the best life possible” and keep them protected “in this little bubble where everybody finds them to be beautiful and perfect,” wanting “their lives to be amazing.” As Metz further expressed, though, that is not always how it works out.

In past interviews, Chrissy Metz has stated a number of times that her own personal weight loss journey allows her to really connect to playing Kate on the popular NBC drama, This Is Us. In the show, Kate is struggling with losing weight while also dealing with other ups and downs that come with the territory of life – love, loss, and everything in between.

Perhaps another positive side of Chrissy Metz accepting the weight loss contract to star in This Is Us is the “sneak preview” that it provides fans and critics for the future of her character. With the ups and downs that come along with most weight loss journeys in general, it is interesting to know that (at least for now) the show will more than likely have Kate continuing to make progress in that regard.

However, as noticed from the very first episode, the writers, cast, and crew of This Is Us thoroughly enjoy to keep viewers guessing. When you think the show is heading in one particular direction, the episode shifts gears and heads a completely different way perhaps in the last few minutes of each episode. Once the plot twist is revealed, a series of flashbacks or other “clues” that may have been easily overlooked leading up to the “big reveal” are then pieced together like an elegantly designed puzzle that puts itself together gradually with each passing episode.
