‘iZombie’ Season 3 Gets Confirmed Premiere Date: Two-Hour Season Premiere In 2017

Fans who are eagerly awaiting the iZombie Season 3 premiere date will need to wait a little longer. After months of suggestions and rumors that it will premiere on the CW in January, the network has confirmed that fans will need to wait until April 2017! The only saving grace is the two-hour premiere that fans will finally be able to watch next April.

iZombie Season 3 was confirmed earlier this year, but CW disappointed fans by sharing that the show wasn’t making the lineup cut for the fall 2016 schedule. The CW announced that a number of previous fall schedule shows were not going to air due to the limitation of just 10 hours of available airtime a week. The network had confirmed the arrival of two new shows, No Tomorrow and Frequency, while also bringing Supergirl over from CBS. With other stronger shows needing a time slot, iZombie, Reign, and The Originals were all dropped from the schedule.

With the announcement that iZombie Season 3 would air on the mid-season schedule, fans expected the premiere to be in January. This would match with when The 100 Season 3 aired for the mid-season slot in 2016 and would also match iZombie’s original schedule slot back in 2015.

It seems that too many shows are still the problem for the January slot. With the arrival of Riverdale, the CW has announced that there is going to be a shakeup on the network. Legends of Tomorrow and Supernatural are getting a day and time slot change respectively, while some shows aren’t going to be returning until later than expected. The Inquisitr previously shared that fans expected the iZombie Season 3 to premiere in January 2017.

iZombie Season 3 will return with a two-hour season premiere on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, according to Entertainment Weekly. The season premiere will begin at 8 p.m. and conclude during the 9 p.m. slot. From the following week, the show will take its usual 9 p.m. slot, following The Flash the way it did during the 2015 fall schedule.

Legends of Tomorrow will take the Tuesday night 9 p.m. slot from January but will air its season finale on March 28. This will allow for iZombie Season 3 to take its slot from this point onward.

iZombie is the last show to make a return to the CW for the 2016-2017 scheduling. While other shows are getting later than expected returns, most will come back in February and March. The 100 Season 4 is the first to return out of the left-behind shows, with Reign Season 4 and The Originals Season 4 following.

The later return date does bring up questions about the future of the show. While The Vampire Diaries Season 8 is the last, it is unclear whether the CW plans to cancel any of the other fall shows. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend hasn’t been performing as strongly as the rest, but it has had the Friday night death slot. It is unlikely for the CW to cancel any of the D.C. Comic shows, even Arrow, which isn’t performing as well as it has in the past. Supernatural is also likely to stick around.

Frequency and No Tomorrow haven’t had extra episodes ordered for this season, but the CW hasn’t said that the two shows would be canceled yet. It is possible that the CW will wait to see how the first few episodes of iZombie and other left-behind shows will do first before making an official decision. It is the first time in the last few years for the CW to bring back a show so late, suggesting that it doesn’t hold much hope for the zombie show.

What do you think about the CW’s decision to hold the iZombie Season 3 premiere so late? Are you excited about the two-hour season premiere or disappointed wit the April start date?
