‘The Originals’ Season 4 Gets Confirmed Premiere Date: Fans Will Wait Longer Than Expected

The Originals Season 4 officially has a premiere date. The CW announced the 2017 line-up this week, but it will be a disappointment to many fans. In particular, fans of The Originals will need to wait longer than expected for the start of the new season.

Back in June, the CW announced that the show wouldn’t return in the 2016 fall schedule. While the show was highly anticipated by its following, there were only so many shows that could be fit into the 10 hours of primetime television a week. The Originals Season 4, while being confirmed for renewal, didn’t make the cut.

Fans have eagerly anticipated a January 2017 start date. Some believed that it would air on January 29, 2017, and there were even rumors that suggested the show would air on ABC instead of the CW. Those rumors have now been confirmed as false. The CW is definitely airing the new season, but it will be after The Vampire Diaries series finale.

Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that The Originals Season 4 will premiere on March 17, 2017. It will still get the Friday night slot but will move to 8 p.m. rather than 9 p.m., which it had throughout Season 3. This will take the place of The Vampire Diaries Season 8, which has a confirmed finale date of March 10, 2017.

The Originals’ fans will not be the only ones disappointed with the CW’s choice in programming. It turns out that a number of previously fall-aired programs are being moved to midseason slots — and not the typical January scheduling. iZombie and Reign are getting April and February premieres, respectively. Even The 100 Season 4 is getting a later-than-usual premiere date; it is set for February rather than January this year.

It’s not just the midseason shows that are getting a change of date. The current line-up will also change from January of 2017, and it’s all because of the new show Riverdale.

‘The Originals’ Canceled? Season 4 Getting Reduced Episode Order

The Originals Season 4 is going to be one of the most disappointing of the lot. Fans have already taken to social media angrily because the season didn’t premiere in the fall schedule. Many fans of the show state that The Originals is better than The Vampire Diaries and would have preferred to see it instead. The Vampire Diaries Season 8 could have waited, according to them.

There are still rumors that The Originals will be canceled after Season 4. The season is only getting a 13-episode order. This now makes a lot of sense considering the placement in the midseason line-up. There aren’t many weeks of primetime schedule left once March hits.

The season finale date for The Originals hasn’t yet been confirmed. Assuming there will be no breaks in the schedule, the date would be June 16, 2017. This would be later than usual for season finale dates, with most CW shows wrapping up by the end of May each year. Even the midseason shows usually wrap up by this point.

The Originals Season 4 is set five years in the future. Fans were left with Klaus being daggered with Papa Tunde’s blade and trapped behind a wall by Uber Original Marcel. Elijah, Kol, Freya, and Rebekah are all in a state of unknown. They are all dying but are kept alive by being connected to Klaus’ life force. All but Klaus are in a dream world, where they wait for Hayley to find a way to save them all. Many fans suspect that Hope will be the key to saving Klaus and the rest of her family.

What do you think about the confirmed date for The Originals Season 4’s premiere? Are you happy to finally have a date or angry at the CW’s decision?
