‘Westworld,’ Season 1 Episode 8 Preview: Bernard Struggles With His Actions And Maeve Wants A New Script

Episode 7 of HBO’s Westworld revealed that what viewers thought was one of the humans was, in fact, a host. So, will there be any startling new revelations in Episode 8?

Spoiler alert: This article discusses HBO’s Westworld. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Viewers found out in Episode 7 of Westworld that Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) was not a human, but a host controlled by Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins). Let’s have a look at what Episode 8 has in store for fans and if there are likely to be any more startling revelations.

The official synopsis according to Carter Matt for Episode 8 (entitled “Trace Decay”) is below.

“Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) struggles with a mandate; Maeve (Thandie Newton) looks to change her script; Teddy (James Marsden) is jarred by dark memories.

“Written by Charles Yu & Lisa Joy; directed by Stephen Williams.”

Episode 7 saw Bernard kill Theresa (Sidse Babett Knudsen) at Dr. Ford’s (Anthony Hopkins) instruction. It appears he might struggle with this action in Episode 8 of Westworld. In fact, the trailer for Episode 8 addresses this directly with Bernard asking Dr. Ford, “Why did you make me kill her?” Dr. Ford gives the following reply.

“One man’s life or death is only but a small price to pay for the dominium I should acquire.”

While this doesn’t give Bernard much by the way of comfort, it does indicate that Dr. Ford will stop at nothing to gain full control over Westworld.

It is no surprise to find out Maeve wants her script changed after she had her whole coding upgraded illegally by Felix (Leonardo Nam) and Sylvester (Ptolemy Slocum) previously. Once again, the trailer for Episode 8 expands on that and we discover that Maeve wants to escape from Westworld. Although, where she will go and what she will do in what will likely be a strange world outside of the park is anyone’s guess.

As for Teddy, it seems he will continue to have flashbacks like what Maeve and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) have had in past episodes of Westworld. However, for him, these appear to be particularly disturbing according to the synopsis. In the Episode 8 trailer, Teddy is shown having flashbacks of Dolores being dragged off by the Man in Black (Ed Harris). This could mean trouble if Teddy manages to override his host coding that prevents him from causing harm to humans.

The Man in Black, though, reveals something interesting to Teddy: he can alter things. So, just how involved in Westworld is the Man in Black? If he has the ability to change coding or story loops for the hosts, does that indicate he used to work for Westworld? If so, it could add further weight to the Westworld fan theory discussed at length on Reddit that William (Jimmi Simpson) is actually a younger version of the Man in Black, since we know he works for Logan (Ben Barnes), and Logan’s company is interested in buying into Westworld.

Along with adding weight to the Episode 8 synopsis, the trailer also looks at Dolores and her discovery of a place she only recently drew. So, what is this new place, and why does William think it is a bad place for Dolores? Only by tuning into Episode 8 of Westworld will reveal the answers.
