Selena Gomez ‘Focuses On Mental Health’ In Rehab: Her Granddad Talks Justin Bieber Split

Selena Gomez has been the subject of multiple rumors since announcing that she was taking time off to focus on her health. The “Kill ‘Em With Kindness” singer explained that the symptoms of lupus, which she had previously shared with fans, included anxiety and depression. But that didn’t stop the rumors that Selena’s career break was somehow linked to her off-again, on-again boyfriend Justin Bieber, including speculation about why she had checked into rehab.

Following her August 30 announcement that she was taking time off to manage her “anxiety, panic attacks and depression,” the 24-year-old pop princess “has been recovering at a Tennessee treatment facility,” multiple sources told Us Weekly.

Gomez also “went to rehab in 2014, one year after being diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease,” noted the media outlet. One of the insiders clarified her reason for cancelling the 34 dates left on her “Revival World Tour.”

“Selena is dealing with lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health. She can go to a very dark place.”

The rehab facility is located just outside of Nashville, and the source described it as a “private and quiet place” that is “super intense.” As to when her fans can anticipate new music from their idol, the former Disney Channel star also halted working on new music, a music industry source told Us.

“She was supposed to be recording, but she hasn’t told anyone when she’ll be back in studio.”

During her recovery, Gomez has spent some time with her family, and was seen at Alcoa, Tennessee’s Texas Roadhouse for dinner with stepfather and her mother.

“Selena was just like any other guest,” the manager of the steakhouse told Us. “She was really nice and tipped well.”

As to when her fans can see Gomez again, Hollywood Life told readers that she is “considering a return at the AMAs [American Music Awards], mainly because ex Justin Bieber won’t be there!” A source told the media outlet that because her ex is “unlikely” to be present at the American Music Awards, “there is less stress surrounding the event.”

“Selena Gomez is relieved that Justin has tour dates on the night of the AMAs and so she is considering a massive return to the spotlight during the award show.”

Both Selena and the Biebs have received nominations for the AMAs.

As for how Bieber might have affected Selena and be linked to her reasons for checking into rehab, her grandfather recently opened up in an interview, according to iTechPost.

Her granddad, Ricardo Gomez, “raised her during the first few years of her life,” and he revealed that Selena “has been under a lot of pressure prior to checking into rehab,” reported the media outlet, which told readers about her allegedly stressful situation.

“She was under a lot of stress with work, and added to that was her dismay in having ended her three-year relationship with boyfriend Justin Bieber.”

Although her grandfather reportedly advised the songstress not to take it all “so seriously,” he admitted that it is not easy.

“She is only human,” pointed out the singer’s granddad.

The fans play a key role in the 2016 American Music Awards when it comes to those coveted awards, and their votes have resulted in “pitting Justin Bieber against Selena Gomez,” pointed out ET.

The former couple will vie in the top Artist of the Year category on Sunday, November 20, which is when the 2016 AMAs will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. In addition to Bieber and Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Carrie Underwood are in the list of final contenders in the category.

Fans can vote for their chosen nominee until Thursday, Nov. 17, just prior to 9 p.m. PT.
