‘The Big Bang Theory’ Shows Amy Doesn’t Always Want To Get Physical With Sheldon

When Amy first met Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory, she seemed to share his aversion to physical contact. As fans remember, their first date happened only because Raj and Howard signed Sheldon up for a dating app and Amy was trying to appease her mother by dating once a year. As the years passed, however, it became clear Amy was up for attention from her standoffish boyfriend. They finally consummated their relationship last season as Sheldon’s “birthday gift” to Amy.

But, as last week’s episode showed, Amy isn’t always up for it, at least not when his only motivation is to get her pregnant. After Amy creates a primitive neural network from her and Sheldon’s skin cells, he decides he wants to procreate with his long-time girlfriend. She spent the entire episode rebuffing his “romantic” advances, which included playing jazz and spreading a pathway of rose petals to the door of their apartment.

In the opinion of Glamour blogger Jessica Radloff, it’s a signal Season 10 will include an engagement — Sheldon and Amy’s, because he can finally imagine making the commitment.

“[I]t finally feels that Sheldon wants it as much as Amy. It’s not that we ever doubted his love, but we always wanted to make sure he was just as gung-ho about this relationship as Amy was. Now that he knows he can live with her, have brilliant children with her, and she won’t put up with his over-the-top antics, it’s all becoming much more clear.”

In its episode recap, Vulture pointed out that procreation coming before marriage might not sit well with the Cooper clan. Although Sheldon has never subscribed to his mother’s religious beliefs, even openly contradicting them when it came to his own scientific work, she remains an important part of his life.

“Never thought we’d see a Shamy pregnancy before a Shamy wedding — what would Bible-totin’ Mama Cooper say? — but Sheldon just might make it so.”

As far as relationships go on The Big Bang Theory, there are not a lot of issues to be explored in future story lines. Howard and Bernadette have gotten married and are expecting a baby, Penny and Leonard tied the knot twice, Raj has started seeing a new person who works at the university — at first lying to his friends in what capacity — and Sheldon and Amy have moved in together. Everything is just plucking along at an expected pace.

Season 10 of The Big Bang Theory has been chock full of notable guest stars, including Katey Sagal and Judd Hirsch. Another notable name is to be added to the list: Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Lloyd will appear in the episode that will air on December 1. His role has not been revealed, but the show’s executives expressed excitement at Lloyd’s addition to the guest cast.

“We’re so excited to be working with Christopher Lloyd, and think we’ve created a fun part that fans will really enjoy.”

Although THR mentioned the show has yet to introduce audiences to Howard’s father, and there are other often mentioned but never seen characters in the Big Bang Theory universe, it seems unlikely Lloyd will be cast as the absent Wolowitz. Few would call that a “fun part,” given his history of having abandoned Howard when the engineer was a young boy.

Before December 1 rolls around, Sheldon and Amy’s relationship will potentially hit a rough patch. The synopsis for the November 17, 2016, episode says Sheldon will become jealous when Bert gets a scientific grant. Bert, although he was a recent guest at Sheldon and Amy’s first brunch, is someone who can get under Sheldon’s skin. He has, in the past, harbored a crush on Amy, and his scientific discipline is Geology, of which the theoretical physicist likes to poke fun.

The Big Bang Theory airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on CBS.
