‘Inhumans’ Movie Unlikely Until ‘2021 To ’24’ According To Marvel Studio Head

Inhumans fans will be waiting for at least 5-8 more years for the film adaptation initially expected to be released in 2018, according an interview a Marvel Studio executive gave earlier this month.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told the Los Angeles Daily News that the Inhumans — a mutant superhero clan popular to avid comic book readers — still were in consideration for a feature film. Outside of pointing to the next phase of Marvel movies, however, Kevin Feige could not pinpoint when the Inhumans might be headed to theaters.

“I think what we could do with Inhumans could be pretty great. I’ve always loved that royal family and the idea of [their secret homeland] Attilan. We are extremely busy on the nine movies that we’re making over the next three years. Where we go with Phase IV, in 2021 to ’24 and beyond, I would be surprised if Inhumans is not a part of that.”

For now, the Inhumans fans have to settle for seeing their superheroes on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While some of the lesser-known characters from the Inhumans have emerged on the show since its premier in 2014, that could change thanks to decision to delay the movie, Kevin Feige explained.

“[Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is] sewing a lot of seeds, and I think will continue to do so in an even bigger fashion, on television before [an Inhumans movie].”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jed Whedon seemed to confirm what Kevin Feige said at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con, Movie Pilot noted. At the event, Jed Whedon told fans of the TV series that the show had more liberty with the Inhumans movie being delayed to bring “classic” characters to life.

The news could be a jolt to Inhumans fans as favorites like Black Bolt, Medusa and Gorgon could soon appear on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Until now, only Inhumans like Lash or Hellfire — secondary characters at best — had appeared on the series.

The biggest reason Inhumans continue to be shuffled in the Marvel Studios lineup is additions to the roster, Kevin Feige explained in April to Collider. Even a hero that is outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe has caused the Inhumans movie to slide down schedule, the executive explained.

“Since we made our initial phase three announcement, we added Spider-Man, which was a big joyous coup for us. We added Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was a big fun continuation of that story for us. Walt Disney Company has announced an Indiana Jones film for right around [the original] time. So I think it will shuffle off the current date that it’s on right now. How far down it shuffles, I’m not sure yet.”

While the Inhumans are popular in their own right, most casual comic book fans are more familiar with the mutant X-men characters after numerous movies were produced by Fox Studios.

That’s precisely why the Inhumans characters have received a push from Marvel and could potentially appear in the MCU sometime in the future. CinemaBlend highlighted this issue recently with comments from X-Men writer Chris Claremont, noting Marvel does not own the rights to the X-men characters.

“So I think the corporate publishing attitude is: ‘why would we go out of our way to promote a title that will benefit a rival corporation’s films when we could take that same energy and enthusiasm and focus and do it for our own properties?’ Hence the rise of the Inhumans as the new equivalent of the mutants.”
