‘Star Wars 8’ News: Cast Member Daisy Ridley Talks Rey Character’s Parents And Origins, Could Ben Kenobi Be Related? [Rumors]

Star Wars 8 news regarding cast member Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey, was a subject of conversation via Vulture. Some details of her origin have remained a mystery, and Ridley addressed a question about her character’s parents. Even Obi-Wan Kenobi’s name was mentioned. Of course, fans have had their own theories, but the Star Wars celebrity hasn’t been following the speculation train of the Lucasfilm franchise.

Daisy Ridley Entertains Fan Theories

So how will Star Wars 8 bring forth this revelation? When Vulture addressed Rey’s relationship to Obi-Wan Kenobi, she was rather evasive in her response.

“We will see in a year. Just sit tight on that question.”

Curt responses are not uncommon in Hollywood when questions about projects in the future are bandied about, although earlier this year, Ridley revealed the opening scene to Star Wars 8. This includes a theory that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Jyn Erso could be the mother of Rey. They somewhat resemble each other and fans have been theorizing whether this is the case.

Ridley addressed this theory, downplaying it.

“I mean, I think historically it wouldn’t work, because she is… Darth Vader is there… so she would ultimately be my great-grandma; no, she would be my grandma. I mean, it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away.”

According to the two celebrities’ bios, Ridley was 23 when The Force Awakens released while Jones is 33. The two events in Star Wars history puts the two movies around 35 years apart. This would mean that if Jyn did give birth to Rey, Jones’ character would be in her mid-40s. Though she’ll be an older mother, this would put that situation in the realm of possibility.

About six months ago at the J.J. Abrams’ Tribeca Talks: Directors Series, The Force Awakens director addressed a young fan about Rey’s parents, according to Cinema Blend. The fan basically asked who they were. The audience applauded and Abrams jokingly chided, “Get out.” Afterward, he made a statement that even Rey wonders about.

“Rey’s parents are not in Episode 7. So I can’t possibly tell you who they are at this moment. But all I will say is that this is something that Rey thinks about, too.”

Since Abrams mentions that her parents are not in Episode 7, this eliminates Luke Skywalker as a possibility. After all, the Star Wars franchise has had a history of their characters being related to each other; for example, Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa as siblings and then there’s Han Solo and General Leia’s spawn, Kylo Ren.

Fan speculation regarding Luke Skywalker’s relationship with Rey was also considered. After all, they did both inhabit Jakku and Tattooine, her newly discovered Jedi abilities, and most prominently how Luke’s lightsaber from The Empire Strikes Back triggered visions of the Knights of Ren encounter.

Obi-Wan Kenobi A Likelihood?

What Star Wars 8 reveal could bring forth the most likeliest of known characters in the universe? There has been some traction regarding the possibility of Ben Kenobi being related to Rey, according to Cinema Blend, as there are quite a few details that back this likelihood.

For one, Siri Tachi and Satine Kryze had been romantically tied to Obi-Wan. There’s also the matter of hearing both Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness’ voices saying, “Rey, these are your first steps” in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ben also has been in longer contact with the weapon, and considering they are powered by Kyber crystals which in turn Force drive the lightsabers.

An Unrelated Force Driven Family Not Introduced?

There is also the possibility of Rey having been from a family that’s keeping a low profile, just like Luke Skywalker who had remained hidden in an unknown star system that was discovered in Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ BB-8 droid. Don’t forget old Ben was considered a hermit, according to Luke, and then there’s Yoda of the forgotten Dagobah planet.

Star Wars 8 is directed by Rian Johnson and set to be released on Dec. 15, 2017.
