‘Vikings’ Season 5 Renewed; Season 4 Part 2 Trailer Reveals Impending Battle

Vikings Season 4 returns from its midseason break in November, when the show premieres in a new time slot.

The release date is November 30, and the show is now airing Wednesdays at 9/8c on History. Vikings Season 5 is renewed and some casting news has emerged. Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been cast in the new season and will play a major role. However, it has not been revealed which Viking he will be playing – or if he is a Viking at all.

Vikings Season 4 trailer features Ragnar Lothbrook dealing with the fallout of his absence. His sons have grown up, and his oldest, Bjorn Ironside, suggests that he probably shouldn’t have come back.

The sneak peek shows us Ragnar’s ambition to return to England, and it is the setup for an epic battle.

Ivar The Boneless also shows that he is an efficient killer despite his disability. He will have a close relationship with his father Ragnar, who will mentor him. According to IGN, Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar, said the following:

“Ragnar sees a mind in Ivar that nobody else sees and doesn’t treat him as a cripple — admits he’s a cripple, but he always believes that his mentality is the strongest thing.”

Bjorn is spotted in the trailer asking his Uncle Rollo to collaborate on a mission, which seems to be a siege of Wessex.

Vikings creator Michael Hirst revealed that an epic battle between Ragnar and King Ecbert can be expected in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

“Yeah, that would be fair to say. Those two favorite characters of mine are two kings who on the surface couldn’t be more different. One is a warrior the other is a kind of Machiavellian thinker. They represent different cultures and religions and yet there’s always been some sort of relationship between them. It was very important for me to get these two characters back together. Travis has been just amazing as Ragnar — better than my wildest dreams. And at last he’s kind of met his match in the very intelligent, clever Saxon king.”

Many fans expect this to be Ragnar’s last stand, as the aging king is rumored to die in Vikings Season 4.

One of Ragnar’s sons will hold the mantle in Season 5, but which one? Bjorn is the leader in the trailer and seems to maintain a good relationship with his brothers, but this may not last.

Ivar the Boneless may emerge as the leader or be chosen by an aging Ragnar.

According to the IGN interview, Floki will help Bjorn build ships and will happily accept him as Ragnar’s successor:

“He feels that Bjorn is the future and that Ragnar’s been away, and this is where he’s going next,” Skarsgard said. “He’s about to embark on a new journey with Bjorn down to the Mediterranean; that’s what they’re aiming for. He’s still curious to explore the world and have some fun.”

The trailer reveals that the new Viking army is twice the size of the one Ragnar led into Paris. Ragnar was defeated by Rollo, and there will not be a second battle. Ragnar is done with being king and is focusing on finishing his score with Ecbert and mentoring his son.

Lagertha is also in what seems like a same-sex relationship in the trailer. The creator of the series hints that Lagertha is tired of men due to her tumultuous relationships thus far.

There is not much information on Vikings Season 5 other than some casting news. Adam Copeland, who was known as Edge in WWE, will join the cast, along with Kris Holden-Ried, who definitely looks the part as he sports a Viking beard in this tweeted photo:

Vikings Season 4 is the longest season, with 20 episodes, and part two will air next month.
