‘Narcos’ Season 3: Cast, Release Date And Other Big Changes To Expect

Narcos has been renewed for two more seasons after completing the Pablo Escobar chapter in two seasons.

Narcos Season 1 went through 15 years of Pablo Escobar’s life in 10 episodes. This allowed the series to be an action packed thriller from start to finish.

However, Narcos Season 3 will detail the rise and fall of the Cali Cartel. The founders of the drug organization have already been cast and featured in the hit series apart from one — Jose Santacruz Londono, also known as Chepe.

Netflix has scheduled the release date for 2017 and like the previous seasons, it will likely premiere around August or September. However, this is yet to be confirmed.

We have been introduced to the Rodriguez Orejuela brothers, Gilberto and Miguel. Pacho Herrera played by Alberto Ammann is the fourth leader in the organization and will return in Season 3.

The final scene with Pedro Pascal as Javier Pena strongly hinted at a Cali Cartel Season 3, and the trailer shows Gilberto Orejuela taking over Escobar.

Due to the Cali Cartel’s short but influential reign as drug lords, their arc will likely be covered in one season rather than two.

Narcos executive producer Eric Newman spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the future seasons of the crime thriller and strongly hinted at a Mexican cartel arc in season 4.

“We purposely did not call the show Pablo Escobar or Medellin. In the same way that Osama Bin Laden begets ISIS, Medellin begets Cali begets the Mexican Cartels. Though they existed at the same time, Cali really got the Mexicans into cocaine, which proved to be a much better business than heroin.”

The Cali Cartel operated very differently from Pablo Escobar. Due to the series realistic nature, it is likely that Season 3 will be less violent and more political.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner described the differences between how Escobar and the Cali Cartel run their drug business.

“Unlike Escobar, who had positioned himself as an outlaw, Cali was very much a part of the system. They had bought their way in and they enjoyed a different kind of protection than Pablo did. Pablo was protected by the people who loved him and Cali was protected by a political and economic system that they had rather ingeniously built.”

Pablo Escobar stayed in Medellin until his death because he took care of the poor so they also protected him. Whether Escobar’s motive was to manipulate or to promote the welfare of others, it worked.

In Season 3, we will see how the Cali Cartel infiltrate the political system, and the consequences of deep corruption in Colombia.

In The Hollywood Reporter interview, the show runner spoke about El Chapo and the potential for a season based around the infamous drug lord.

“It depends on where we start in the Mexican timeline. Chapo was there at the beginning, in a way. He was one of the younger guys in the Guadalajara cartel before it splintered and he and another guy were given Sinaloa as territory. In our timeline currently, that’s already happened because that was in 1985. So it depends. If we take our time, it could take a while. If we jump right into it, it could be really soon.”

The showrunner has stated that there will be a lot of new cast members added to the series. Javier Pena is returning, but it is unclear if Murphy the narrator will be staying in Columbia.

The series may also explore more of the victims or the drug war, such as the Limon and Maritza plot, which shows how people can get in too deep without realizing it.

There is a lot to look forward to in Narcos Season 3. Are you looking forward to the Cali Cartel?
