WWE News: Backstage Update On Triple H’s Return To WWE, What Role Will He Play On ‘WWE RAW’?

WWE COO Triple H made his first appearance on WWE TV a few weeks ago when he had not been seen since his loss to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 32. His first act in his return was to pedigree Reigns, then go on to pedigree his protege Seth Rollins while helping Kevin Owens win the WWE Universal Championship. This clearly made KO the new “guy” for The Authority. Both WWE RAW Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and RAW GM Mick Foley were noticeably in shock over the return, not knowing why The Game did what he did.

We still have no idea why — even Kevin Owens is clueless why Triple H helped him out. Triple H has yet to return to television since he helped Owens win the title, and it made sense why up to a point. Storyline wise, he wanted things to settle. However, in real life terms, Triple H was busy with both the Cruiserweight Classic and WWE NXT tapings. Now that the CWC has ended, and the NXT tapings are out of the way for now, seeing the cerebral assassin make his official return is more than likely happening soon.

According to Ringside News, the plan as of now is to have Triple H make his return at some point on the WWE Clash of Champions PPV. This is the first WWE RAW branded event of the year, and the show has been stacking up relatively well. If Triple H does return at the event, the match he likely going to try to get involved in is the Seth Rollins vs Kevin Owens match, which will be for the WWE Universal Title.

Roman Reigns was removed from the contention due to Rusev last week on WWE RAW, as he lost a match against Owens due to the Bulgarian Brute. Reigns is likely going to get a WWE United States Championship opportunity at Clash of Champions, which has been a long time coming with both Rusev and Reigns at each other’s throats for the past few months. Meanwhile, Rusev will face Seth Rollins tonight on WWE RAW for the first time, and it will be interesting to see if Reigns gets involved in the match.

When it comes to Triple H, the plan has been for The Game to face off with Seth Rollins at some point. It was actually scheduled to occur at WrestleMania 32, but various injuries, including one Rollins suffered, changed those plans completely. Cesaro, Randy Orton, John Cena, and Seth Rollins all were unable to compete at the event. Although John Cena did make an appearance alongside The Rock where he pretty much helped him get rid of The Wyatt Family. Cena would then miss the rest of the time he needed to recover from his injury.

Seth would come back months later at WWE Extreme Rules and would end up winning back the WWE World Heavyweight Title from Roman Reigns at WWE Money in the Bank, only to get cashed in on by Dean Ambrose to give the Lunatic Fringe some solid revenge. The plan was then to have Rollins face off with Triple H at WrestleMania 33, then Finn Balor got hurt and plans had to change yet again, but not as drastic as before with so many others going down at the same time.

The plan for Triple H to turn on Seth Rollins was supposed to happen a little later this year rather than this soon. However, pushing the turn up may not hurt Rollins or Triple H when it comes to their match at WrestleMania 33. WWE was able to build a solid story around The Authority and Daniel Bryan for months and would end up giving him an amazing WrestleMania experience where he would beat Triple H and go on to main event the show, winning the WWE World Heavyweight Title all at the same night.

Bryan’s story started around WWE SummerSlam the year prior, and the WWE had to stretch his story with The Authority over two shows. For Rollins and Triple H, they only have to tell the story on one show. That said, content for this should be easier to stretch out with one show to work on rather than two. It will also be interesting to see the dynamic with Triple H and his wife, Stephanie McMahon.

While Stephanie is the Commissioner of RAW, Triple H is the COO of the WWE, which gives him power over both WWE RAW and SmackDown Live. Initially, the authority figures for the brands were going to be called General Managers, then COOs, before finally settling on Commissioners. This makes more sense anyway, as it means Triple H can go over Stephanie’s head and it allows him to get away with more as the guy still officially in charge of both brands. That said, he will still most likely stick to WWE RAW and leave the blue brand alone for a while.
