Is One Direction’s Harry Styles A Rock Star?

Is One Direction’s Harry Styles A Rock Star? What is Styles’ music genre? That is a much trickier question than it first appears to be. Sure 1D has been strictly teen pop, at least up to the point of their hiatus, but that was nearly a year ago, and the group was under contract with Modest Management, Syco Records and of course Simon Cowell.

Harry Styles will no doubt take advantage of his new creative freedom, and will bring those sounds back to One Direction when and perhaps, if they reunite. It is almost certain that if they reunite, it will be without Simon Cowell, Modest Management, and Syco Records. The boys are genuinely talented, especially Harry Styles who has a pitch perfect voice and a knack for songwriting. Management restrictions are simply holding Harry and the other boys back.

Neither One Direction’s Harry Styles or Zayn Malik were happy with the music One Direction produced, despite the fine quality of the vocals, though they were thankful for the opportunity up to a point. Despite their phenomenal success, neither of them felt the band merited the attention they were getting from a musical perspective. They both wanted to create something far more unique and innovative. They both knew they could if given the opportunity.

Zayn Malik told Fader One Direction’s management rejected anything he suggested and would not allow any of bluesy inflections, no matter how many times he tried to slip one in.

“There was a general conception that the management already had of what they wanted for the band. And I just wasn’t convinced with what we’re selling. I wasn’t 100 percent behind the music. It wasn’t me. It was music that was already given to us, and we were told this is what is going to sell to these people. As much as we were the biggest, most famous boy band in the world, it felt weird. We’re told to be happy abut something that we weren’t happy about.”

Though One Direction’s Harry Styles may have put it a bit more cautiously than Zayn Malik, they were both talking about the same feeling. Styles described his angst with One Direction music this way, according to BBC.

“We all sat and watched the film of The Beatles arriving in America. And, to be honest, that really was like us. Stepping off the plane, the girls, the madness. It was exactly the same as when we got there – just 50 years earlier. None of us think we’re in the same league as them music-wise. We’d be total fools if we did. Fame-wise, it’s probably even bigger, but we don’t stand anywhere near them in terms of music.”

One Direction’s Harry Styles seems to feel almost guilty and apologetic for the quality of 1D music compared to the Beatles, and yet he saw that their level of fame was the same. It is telling that the first real music contact he made while on hiatus was hanging out with Ringo Star and making an appeal to his hero and role model Paul McCartney for musical advice.

Harry Styles wants to go there. He wants to be the next Paul McCartney. He wants it so badly he can taste it. He wants to give this new century a new sound, something revolutionary, just like what the Beatles gave the 1960s.

But, is One Direction’s Harry Styles a rock star? He has the attitude, according to a source close to Kendall Jenner, who told People about Harry’s rock star ambitions.

“Harry has always been ‘that guy’ for Kendall. She would love to be in a real relationship with him, but he’s always had issues settling down in the past with her because he has that rock star mentality.”

Okay, so One Direction’s Harry Styles having a rock star attitude about settling down isn’t the same thing as being a rock star, but it is related. Styles is serious about his music. So serious he’s willing to put a sweet and gorgeous Victoria Secret model on the back burner indefinitely to pursue his career.

Is One Direction’s Harry Styles a rock star? One thing is certain, for a pop star he has certainly had some very high profile rockers collaborating with him on his new album. After getting advice from the two remaining Beatles, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Star, Elton John offered to help him out. Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid revealed to Daily Mail that he had collaborated with Styles on solo music for years before Styles even left One Direction for the hiatus. Most recently, Red Hot Chili Peppers offered him at least one of their unreleased songs. Anthony Kiedis of the Chili Peppers is also collaborating with Styles.

If One Direction’s Harry Styles is not a rock star, why are so many real rock stars taking him so seriously? Why are all these heavy hitters really going to bat for Styles, giving him music, helping him write music and working with him trying to give his album a real rocker edge?

Everybody knows Harry Styles is sweet, polite and a really nice guy, but would that really get Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, Sir Elton John and Anthony Kiedis out of their seats to help him? Probably not. The only reason, short of blackmail, or kidnapping, that would get these guys to help Styles this much would be that Harry Styles is really a talented musician with a lot of promise.

Is One Direction’s Harry Styles a rock star? Well, if Ringo Star, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Anthony Kiedis are taking him seriously enough to advise, collaborate and hang out with him then it is a pretty safe bet.

One Direction’s Harry Styles is a rock star and his new albums are going to rock the music world into a new direction.
