President Barack Obama Uses Philadelphia Clinton Campaign Appearance To Attack Donald Trump

President Barack Obama has launched a scathing attack against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump whilst on the campaign trail for Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia. Obama used the campaign appearances to lambast Trump’s claim that he’s a champion of the common man. The President has been picking up campaigning duties for Hillary Clinton this week, following last week’s news that Clinton would be absent from the campaign trail while she recovers from pneumonia.

According to Politico, President Obama claimed Donald Trump is no champion for working people, saying “Look, I keep on reading this analysis that, well, you know, Trump’s got support from, like, working folks. Really? Like, this is the guy you want to be championing working people? This guy who spent 70 years on this Earth showing no concern for working people. This guy is suddenly going to be your champion? I mean he’s spent most of his life trying to stay as far away from working people as he could.”

Quite predictably, Obama claimed the real champion of the working people to be his party’s candidate and Donald Trump’s rival, Hillary Clinton.

The President clearly wanted to make his support for Hillary Clinton absolutely clear, saying he “really, really, really” wants to see Hillary Clinton make it to the White House. He recalled their hard-fought 2008 battle and Clinton’s early win in Pennsylvania but said he isn’t just campaigning for Hillary Clinton out of duty to his political party, but really wants to see her elected. It was undeniably a loud voice of endorsement from Barack Obama, which is something the Clinton campaign definitely needs while their candidate is missing from the campaign trail.

That being said, Barack Obama’s appearance wasn’t with the sole intention to support Hillary Clinton. According to the Independent, Obama also used the appearance as an opportunity to defend his administration’s record on a number of key issues. The outgoing president highlighted his achievements in economic gains at hom while strengthening overseas relationships. He heralded renewed diplomatic ties with Cuba, a nuclear deal with Russia, and the death of Osama Bin Laden as the great accomplishments he’s made as president.

However, the President was keen to stress that his work isn’t complete yet and it was always going to be impossible for him to achieve everything he wanted to achieve within two terms. With that in mind, he urged voters to support Hillary Clinton as the candidate best positioned to continue the progress his administration has made.

Obama wasn’t keen to distract from the main purpose of his appearance, though, attacking Donald Trump. He appeared to praise the GOP as the party of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan but said Donald Trump was a far cry from such figures. Obama appeared to tow the Clinton campaign’s line in terms of attacking Trump, calling his vision for America “a dark, pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, we turn away from the rest of the world. They’re not offering serious solutions. They’re just fanning resentment and blame and anger and hate. And that is not the America we know. That’s not the America I know.”

President Obama is expected to make further campaign appearances for Hillary Clinton ahead of the election in November. However, he won’t be the only Democratic party figure coming out to support Clinton. His wife and First Lady Michelle Obama is also expected to make appearances for Clinton in the coming weeks, alongside Vice President Joe Biden.
