‘Pretty Little Liars’: Marlene King on Mary Drake’s Child, Spencer, Toby, And What To Expect in Season 7B [Spoilers]
Pretty Little Liars Season 7, Episode 10 aired Tuesday night on Freeform network. It was the summer finale, and there are a lot of things to talk about. Who is really dead and which PLL characters are alive? Was Mary Drake telling the truth about the identity of her child? Showrunner Marlene King discussed the events and also teased what to expect in Season 7B.
Spoilers are ahead. If you have not seen the August 30 episode of Pretty Little Liars, you may want to stop reading now.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Marlene King said the summer finale would feature the most spectacular death in the history of the Freeform series. Spectacular isn’t the right word, though. It was more like shocking and gruesome. The death the PLL executive producer was talking about turned out to be Noel Kahn (Brant Daughterty), who had his head cut off.
It seemed there might be two other casualties, but fans are not sure if those characters are dead or alive. On the midseason finale, Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen) and Yvonne (Kara Royster) were in a car accident. At the end of the episode, the two are not moving, and Toby is bent over the steering wheel. There is blood on the side of his head. The injuries don’t appear to be fatal, but Variety asked King if Toby died on Pretty Little Liars.
“People know I love the character of Toby so you can read into that what you want to read into that. He’s one of my favorites on the show. It would be hard for me to make that phone call to him.”
There is one other PLL character that fans are worried about. That person is Spencer Hastings, portrayed by Troian Bellisario. Toward the end of the summer finale, Jenna Marshall (Tammin Sursok) shot Spencer. As she lay on the ground breathing heavily, Alison DiLaurentis’ (Sasha Pieterse) aunt revealed that Spencer is Mary Drake’s (Andrea Parker) child. After this, Bellisario’s character closed her eyes, and her chest stopped heaving up and down. Was Mary Drake telling the truth? Did Spencer die on Pretty Little Liars?
“That was a huge revelation not just for Spencer, but for the Pretty Little Liars and the show and the storyline. It’s a driving engine of Spencer’s emotional story as we come back in April.”
That makes it sound like Spencer Hastings is alive. However, “Spencer’s story” can be interpreted different ways. If she did die, her past could be played out. There were always problems between Spencer and her sister, Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto). Perhaps knowing that she wasn’t really her sister was a driving force of their issues. However, if Spencer didn’t die on Pretty Little Liars, then the character will be going through a lot in Season 7B. She will know that Mary Drake is her mother, which means she is related to Alison. It would explain why Veronica Hastings (Lesley Fera) warned Spencer to stay away from Ali. It had nothing to do with Alison herself, but she wanted to keep the adoption a secret. She would want to know why she was never told, and what other secrets the family has been hiding from her. There definitely would be mixed emotions; that’s for sure.
As for what else fans can expect in Season 7B, TV Line reported that the premiere would resume the story just moments after the 7A finale. Viewers will discover the identity of Charlotte DiLaurentis’ (Vanessa Ray) father and learn how Spencer was conceived. King confirmed that the idea was taken from Sara Shepard’s books. There will also be more than one wedding, Wren’s (Julian Morris) first scene will be with Ezra (Ian Harding), and Paige (Lindsay Shaw) is not completely gone.
Other Pretty Little Liars Season 7B spoilers include Alison’s pregnancy affecting all of her friends, especially Emily (Shay Mitchell). The executive producer teased that everything on PLL is spectacular, and Ali’s pregnancy is no exception. Jenna and a few other characters are working for A.D., even if they don’t know his true identity.
