Selena Gomez has reportedly gone off the grid after revealing that her struggles with Lupus have led to bouts of anxiety, depression, and panic attacks.
On Tuesday, in the midst of her Revival World Tour, Selena Gomez announced she would be taking some time off to address the symptoms of her illness, and now, she’s reportedly distanced herself from the public eye and possibly everyone else.
“Those I’ve been talking to say they haven’t heard directly from [Selena Gomez] in a few days — she’s either already in rehab or has shut off her phone,” a source close to the singer told Radar Online on September 1. “Her mom [Mandy Teefy] has been ‘completely unreachable’ for the past few weeks as she’s been dealing with this.”

Last month, after Bieber criticized his fans for being hard on his new girlfriend, Sofia Richie, and shared a new photo of the two of them together in a car, Selena Gomez suggested that Bieber shouldn’t be sharing photos of Richie at all. In turn, Selena Gomez was accused of using Bieber for fame and of possibly cheating on him with singer Zayn Malik.
Although many believe Selena Gomez’s struggles with anxiety and depression were prompted by the singer’s feud with Bieber, a Radar Online source claimed her struggles began back in June when her friend, Christina Grimmie, was killed by a fan in Orlando, Florida.
“[Selena Gomez] wasn’t the same after that,” an insider told the outlet. “She was definitely depressed — it was obvious.”

Another Radar Online source claimed that Selena Gomez’s public feud with Justin Bieber might not have been the leading cause of her recent struggles, it was a major red flag for her mom. According to the source, Selena Gomez’s out-of-character outburst against her ex-boyfriend was a sign that she may not be thinking clearly. Then, after she received major backlash due to her allegations against Bieber, in which she claimed he had cheated on her multiple times, Gomez reportedly took it “just beyond horribly — beyond!”
The outlet went on to reveal that Selena Gomez checked into an unnamed rehab facility on August 30 after returning to the United States following a performance in Auckland, New Zealand, although she did not confirm any such thing in her statement to fans earlier this week.
Selena Gomez had been using “Lunesta, Ambien, Klonopin and Xanax. Not all at once. And more ‘recreational’ than any one thing specifically,” a Radar Online source alleged.
On August 30, Selena Gomez released a statement to People Magazine, explaining why she was in dire need of a break from her hectic career.
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” she said in her statement. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” Selena Gomez explained. “Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
