[RUMOR] Xbox 360 gets price cut this weekend

No matter how much Sony and Microsoft might protest, it’s pretty much a given that Nintendo has this console generation in the bag, thanks to the Wii. There’s still the significant matter of second place, however, which means we gamers get to watch as S & M do battle for the silver medal.

Last week, Sony landed a haymaker by announcing the PS3 Slim, along with a new price point of $299 for all PS3 consoles. As it happens, Microsoft may already be winding up a counter-punch. Over the past few days, catalogue ads from various retailers (including Wal-Mart, Meijer, and Best Buy) have been unearthed by several of the biggest gaming blogs.

Said ads all point to the same thing: a new price point for the Xbox 360 from this weekend; specificially, the ads seem to tease at a $299 price tag for the Xbox 360 Elite. The timing would make sense, at least. The PS3 Slim launches Monday, and Microsoft would love nothing more than to overshadow Sony’s launch. Furthermore, the fact that several retailers are involved make this pretty convincing. Basically, I’m calling this as totally real.

The console wars just got horribly bloody for all contestants who aren’t Nintendo.
