Madonna sure knows how to get headlines. The singer recently caused a bit of a stir with comments about President Barack Obama, lobbying onstage for his re-election in a rather curious way, claiming that he is a “black Muslim.”
The singer gave her backing to President Obama as he fights for a second term in the White House during her show in Washington, DC on Monday, comparing the POTUS to the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln and famous civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. in a video montage. Madonna, who had “Obama” written on her back, told the audience:
“Y’all better vote for f—ing Obama, OK? For better or for worse, all right? We have a black Muslim in the White House. That’s some amazing s–t. It means there is hope in this country. And Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man, goddamn it.”
Little problem there: President Barack Obama isn’t a Muslim. Not only did he swear in as President on a Bible, he is a practicing Christian, and while you might not like at least his former church, it was a Christian church nonetheless. Side note: Googling “Obama is a bad Muslim” turns up some interesting arguments against his “fealty” to Islam. If the POTUS is a “secret Muslim,” he is terribly lapsed.
In any case, Madonna faced severe backlash for her comments, and has recently back-tracked on them in a statement.
“I was being ironic on stage,” Madge says. “Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim — though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were? The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don’t care what religion Obama is — nor should anyone else in America.”
A good point, but did you have to court controversy to say it? You’re Madonna, you’ve already got the attention, why say something so stupid?
