WWE News: Kofi Kingston On What Was Missing Before The Brand Split & Who The New Day Has Their Eye On
When the WWE announced the return of the brand extension earlier this year, fans got a little worried that some of their favorite tag teams might get split up. After all, it happened before and could certainly happen again. But as it turns out, the only pure tag team to get divided was the Lucha Dragons, and they did so amicably before the draft. Specifically, fans breathed a sigh of relief when Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods remained in tact as The New Day.
Kofi, Big E and Xavier remain the longest WWE Tag Team Champions in history, headlining a stacked tag team division on RAW. Things are a little less defined in the division on Smackdown, whereas RAW arguably boasts the three best teams on the entire roster. The New Day has to contend with the likes of Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson, not to mention rising stars Enzo & Big Cass. It’s been a little less than a month since the brand split went into effect, creating a new degree of competition among the WWE superstars. In an interview with Channel Guide Magazine, Kofi said the majority of the roster is competitive and we’re seeing that now more than ever with RAW and Smackdown Live going head-to-head.
“That has been kind of missing within WWE over the past few years. There is no competition. Now with Raw and SmackDown, we have created a competition within ourselves. It really provides for an amazing product because we want to be the best on the Raw side, and they want to be the best on the SmackDown side. It provides for a great time for the WWE Universe. It’s been awesome so far. Raw has changed its look with a new set. It’s weird now seeing the announce table out of the arena and by the ramp. There are these little things that when you look at each show it has a different feel, and that’s good.”
That competition Kofi is referring to in sports entertainment really went away in 2001 when the WWE bought out WCW, and to a lesser degree, ECW. Other promotions have either failed or not been able to generate enough resources to achieve the same level of success the WWE has. The brand split reinvigorates that concept that’s been missing for 15 years.
As a result of the return of the brand extension, WWE was in need of more talent to help fill out both of those rosters. Six superstars were called up in early April, followed by seven more in last month’s draft. Kingston notices the influx, and in a tag team division with plenty of fresh faces, Kofi and The New Day have a fixed eye on one team in particular.
“Enzo and Cass, we’ve wanted to mix it up with them for a long time. They are guys who engage the crowd. They know that is an important part of being a WWE superstar and to last in the company. They are very good on the mic. We look at ourselves the same way. So it’s good competition to see who the big dog in the park is.”
It will be interesting to see when the two teams eventually square off, if at all. Both were in the same match at Money In The Bank when Kofi and The New Day defended their titles in a fatal four way match with Enzo & Cass, Gallows & Anderson and The Vaudevillains. For the first time in a while, The New Day face a serious threat to relinquish their championships when they put them on the line against The Club at SummerSlam. A title change, one would imagine, would then eventually lead to a program between The Club and Enzo & Cass. The Inquisitr recently reported that Big E’s exclusion from the recent tag team title feud could spell the beginning of the end for The New Day, not only as champs, but as a group as well with Big E set for a potential singles run.
However, WWE fans would certainly agree with Kofi when it comes to a potential angle between The New Day and the realest guys in the room.
