Fight For The Role Of Squirrel Girl Heats Up — Edgar Wright Endorses Anna Kendrick, But It’s Shannon Purser’s Dream Role

As Marvel continues to make one hit film after another, working their way down the list of more obscure comic book characters, fans are eager to know who (if anyone) will end up playing the beloved but lesser-known superhero Squirrel Girl. Notable for her adorable outfit and bizarre superpowers, Squirrel Girl recently came into popularity as a surprisingly powerful Marvel hero who bested the likes of Wolverine, Deadpool, and Dr. Doom. Her fame has become significant enough that a movie is quite plausible, so who should do the honors of portraying her?

As the Inquisitr recently reported, Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick is interested in donning the fuzzy suit, even though there isn’t necessarily a plan to make the film yet.

“My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” she said.

According to Comic Book Resources, film director Edgar Wright recently endorsed Anna Kendrick for the part in a tweet. Wright worked with Anna Kendrick in his movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World, which he referenced in his tweet. He pointed out that many of the cast members of Scott Pilgrim have gone on to portray Marvel characters in movies, so why shouldn’t Anna Kendrick play Squirrel Girl?

Anna Kendrick responded appreciatively to the tweet with a series of smiling and blushing emojis. Wright replied back joking that, as Squirrel Girl, she’d have to fight (and defeat) all the other Marvel heroes in order to earn the title — another reference to Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

Despite both Edgar Wright and Anna Kendrick supporting the idea of her playing Squirrel Girl, there’s another contender in the ring for the role. Shannon Purser, the breakout star from Netflix’s popular new show Stranger Things, is even more eager to play the quirky hero than Kendrick. She published a tweet asking who she should talk to about getting the part.

After originally expressing interest for the role, Shannon Purser recently doubled down on the demand for the part, insisting that she “loves” the idea of playing the character. According to the Revelist, Squirrel Girl is her dream role.

“I think Squirrel Girl is just adorable but at the same time is totally boss and completely awesome. I think people need a character like that. It’s easy in the superhero realm to feel like a lot of the female superheroes we see are grown women who are super responsible and know what their purpose is and that kind of thing. Squirrel Girl is a little bit younger and like a real person, trying to figure out her life and then also having to save the world. I love that.”

It’s possible after all this discussion, a Squirrel Girl movie will never get made. But fans can hope, especially since Den of Geek recently revealed that three more untitled Marvel movies are in the works. All three are slated for release in 2020.

Who do you think would be perfect to play Marvel’s Squirrel Girl? Is Anna Kendrick up for the challenge, or would the lesser-known star Shannon Purser be better for the part? Or is there someone else you have in mind?
