Gillian Anderson Tweets New ‘American Gods’ Teaser — Could She Be The Next James Bond?

Gillian Anderson, one-half of the main cast of the iconic X-Files playing the role of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully, will appear on TV in another geek franchise. According to Den of Geek, Gillian Anderson will appear in the Starz TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved fantasy novel American Gods.

At the helm of the project will be Bryan Fuller, who recently gained acclaim and recognition through his work on Hannibal and Pushing Daisies, along with Michael Green.

Gillian Anderson will take on the role of Media, a character who is described as the mouthpiece of the New Gods, who functions as their public face and sales representative by taking the form of various iconic celebrities. The character is described to be perky and always in control, something that Gillian Anderson should have no problem portraying with conviction. Media is a character who lives off the attention and worship that people give to their cellphones, laptops, and TVs, and it looks to be an exciting role for the X-Files actress.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Gillian Anderson first tweeted an out-of-focus photo of herself in her new role, with her red fingernails and blonde curls suggesting that her character would take on the persona of Marilyn Monroe at some stage during the upcoming TV show.

Now, the X-Files star has tweeted a new teaser photo that has confirmed everyone’s suspicions. In the original novel that the new TV series is based upon, Gillian Anderson’s character Media most notably takes on the role of a “foul-mouthed Lucille Ball,” as Entertainment Weekly puts it. Fans now can’t help but wonder what other liberties will be taken with the original text and how that will look in the resulting TV show.

The cast will also include Ricky Whittle as the leading character, Shadow Moon, with Emily Browning as his wife, Laura, as well as Cloris Leachman, Ian McShane, Pablo Schreiber, Peter Stormare, Yetide Badaki, Jonathan Tucker, and Bruce Langley.

American Gods is about the rise of a new breed of gods who are born from the public’s obsession with media, celebrities, technology, money, drugs, and other vices. The rise of the new gods triggers a power struggle between themselves and the old gods from mythology and the bible. The main character, Shadow Moon, becomes the bodyguard and the companion to Mr. Wednesday, who is really Odin from Norse mythology. The duo embarks on a cross-country trip in order for Mr. Wednesday to rally his fellow older gods, who have lived in a dormant state.

As much as Gillian Anderson’s fans are excited to see her on the small screen once again, they are still rallying for her to take on the role of the female James Bond. According to the Guardian, Gillian Anderson would more than happily take the role of being a female James Bond.

The enthusiasm for the role was apparent when Gillian Anderson took to Twitter and posted a mockup poster of herself as James Bond, referring to herself as Jane Bond.

Fans have followed suite and a series of mockup posters have followed.

The internet is abuzz with speculation as to who will fill Daniel Craig’s shoes in the role now that the actor, who played James Bond in the last four films, has said in no uncertain terms that he will not be reprising the role, even turning down an offer for $60 million to make two more Bond films.

Actors in the running include Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba, yet despite the excitement surrounding either of these actors possibly taking on the role, there is an increasingly large group of people who are still very supportive of the idea of Gillian Anderson making history for being the first female James Bond ever featured in any form of media.
