‘The Mindy Project’ Season 5 Spoilers: Mindy And Danny Back Together After Steamy Finale?

The Mindy Project Season 5 is set to air on October 4, with a 16-episode arc broken up into eight-episode blocks. Danny (Chris Messina) made a huge comeback in the Season 4 finale, when he and Mindy (Mindy Kaling) found themselves stuck in a broken elevator for hours. Given that there are still lingering feelings between them, it did not come as a shock when Mindy and Danny eventually slept together. The Mindy Project Season 4 Episode 26, titled “Homewrecker,” ended with Danny walking Mindy home and the two saying “I love you” to each other. Does this mean that Mindy and Danny will get back together?

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Warburton, The Mindy Project showrunner, revealed that Season 5 is going to pick up, more or less, exactly where the season finale left off — Mindy stuck between being with Danny or giving Jody (Garret Dillahunt) another chance. There’s also the dilemma that Danny is still engaged and has yet to tell Mindy about it.

Warburton shared that fans of the hit Hulu series will be excited to see how quickly everything moves forward after Mindy makes that pivotal decision. While some may be disappointed with the direction they are heading, Warburton believed that majority will feel satisfied with what they have landed on. Some Mindy Project fans are still rooting for Danny and Mindy’s relationship to work, hoping that the season finale was an indication of a reunion. Warburton, however, hinted that things are not as easy as they seem.

“We still understand that these characters do love each other on some level, but it’s just not working for any number of reasons and I think it was important to remind people that that’s still true, but those reasons are still there, too,” he explained.

When Chris Messina was dropped from series regular to a recurring cast member, fans speculated that this will be the end for the couple. Warburton explained that they needed to shake up Mindy and Danny’s relationship to make the series more interesting. Now that Mindy has her life together, Warburton admitted that The Mindy Project did not seem as fun as it was when they first started.

“I have a hard time seeing how we could do tons and tons of more episodes with them as just this together couple,” he said.

During the same time, Messina, himself, was looking to expand his horizons outside of The Mindy Project. Warburton and the writers then decided, at the start of Season 4, that Mindy and Danny will have a “big messy breakup” just to move the story forward.

While Chris Messina won’t be back a series regular on Season 5 soon, the showrunner said that fans will get to see more of him in the coming episodes. Warburton explained that there were just too many other parts of Mindy’s world that they would love to explore further.

“So our goal is always — and this is something I hope we did with the last two episodes — is when we decide we want to bring back Chris Messina — and he’s so great and such a team player and always ready to come back when we need him — bring him back when it’s really going to help the story or we’re going to learn something really important from him. That was our philosophy in these 13 [episodes], and hopefully we’re going to keep doing that next year.”
