Major Lazer, Justin Bieber & MØ’s ‘Cold Water’ Tops Spotify, Eyes Drake’s UK Number One

Drake will be saying goodbye to his number one reign this week on the U.K’s Official Singles Charts after 15 weeks, and it’s all thanks to the success of Major Lazer’s new collaborative “Cold Water” single with Justin Bieber and MØ.

“Cold Water” now has taken an early lead on the U.K.’s official trending chart after its premiere last Friday (July 22) and is set to to debut at No. 1 on the U.K.’s official singles chart on Friday.

Drake’s “One Dance” smash, which features Wizkid and Kyla, has sat atop the U.K’s Official singles chart since April 15, ten days after it was released in the U.K. as the second single from the Toronto rapper’s fourth album Views.

However, with the No. 1 debut of Bieber, Major Lazer and Mo’s “Cold Water” in the Top 100 Official Singles Chart Update, “One Dance” is set to fall from the top and miss out on tying the record for the most consecutive weeks at No. 1, held by Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” which logged 16 weeks at the top of singles chart in 1991.

Unless Drake’s “One Dance” receives an unprecedented influx of sales and streams over the next few days, “Cold Water” is headed for the No. 1 position this week. “One Dance” has slipped to No. 5, putting it behind Jonas Blue’s “Perfect Strangers” (2), Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down” (3) and Calum Scott’s “Dancing On My Own” (4).

The U.K. chart update is good news for Major Lazer, Bieber, and MØ. It comes after the song premiered with on-the-hour airplay at iHeartRadio stations last Friday.

“Cold Water” jumped in at No. 28 on this week’s Mediabase pop radio airplay chart, even though the song dropped late in the July 17-23 tracking week, and has now moved up to No. 23 on the building chart after one day.

Within 45 minutes of dropping, “Cold Water” rocketed to No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes single sales chart before going on to peak at 65 iTunes charts around the world. The track has now spent five days atop the Worldwide iTunes chart.

Over on Spotify, “Cold Water” pulled in 1,029,062 million streams in the U.S. and debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Top 50 in the first 24 hours after release. It racked up 2,909,329 million streams globally in the same time period and was at No. 5 on the service’s global chart. The lyric video accompanying the release punched in over five million in 24 hours. Views are now over 13 million.

On Sunday, “Cold Water” moved to No. 2 on Australia’s Top 50 on Spotify, No. 1 on the U.K.’s Top 50 chart on the service, and No. 2 on the Spotify’s Top 50 in the U.S. As of Tuesday, it is No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart with over 4.5 million daily plays (8.4 million on Monday). Countries included in that array are the U.K., Austria, Canada, Australia, Sweden, New Zealand, Germany, and more. The song is currently No.2 on Spotify’s U.S. Top 50 list and is expected to be No. 1 by Wednesday.

The track entered Billboard’s Pop Song chart at No. 25 and is expected to strongly impact Billboard’s Hot 100 chart next week.

Meanwhile, a Gucci Mane remix of “Cold Water” and a music video for the official single is coming.

During an interview with BBC Radio 1 on Monday, Diplo mused on the shift in perceptions from some music lovers towards Bieber after his acclaimed Purpose album was released last November.

Diplo explained, “At the end of the day, if you’re making great music people are gonna pay attention to the music more than your fanbase or… whatever, they’re just gonna love the music for what it is I think he proved that with the Purpose album.”
