Virginia Coffee Shop Offers Discounts To Those Who Know How To Use Their Manners

The world appears to be going downhill in quick fashion, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to be rude to their fellow humans. That is why a coffee shop in Virginia is trying to remind everyone that being kind and polite is quite rewarding. As a matter of fact, the shop is actually rewarding those that use their manners by giving them discounts on their coffee orders.

CUPS Coffee & Tea in Roanoke, Virginia, isn’t looking to discriminate against anyone and they aren’t flat-out refusing service to a single customer. As shown on their official Facebook page, though, they are giving some extra discounts to certain people.

Don’t worry, everyone is eligible to receive the discounts, but you’ve got to make sure that you do the right things and say the magic words.

Yes, that sign is sitting outside of CUPS Coffee & tea every single day, and it gives a few tips on how you can get your coffee at a discounted price.

In order to receive that discount, you simply need to have some manners and be polite to those who are serving you. They’re not asking for a lot, but just a little bit of human interaction and a sign that manners still exist among the members of the human race.

The sign has started going viral thanks to a picture on Imgur that simply stated “Sign at a local coffee shop.”

Essentially, CUPS Coffee & Tea is looking to put an extra cost on those that wish to be quick, unfriendly, and treat the patrons as less than human. Being able to get a discount of up to $3.25 for simply adding four words to your request is not a lot to ask as far as effort or your time.

Now, before getting carried away, Olivia Byrd is the owner of CUPS Coffee & Tea and she has said that the sign was really just meant to be a joke. She has confirmed that no-one has been asked to or paid $5 for a small cup of coffee.

Austin Simms is an employee at the coffee shop, and he’s the one that actually wrote the sign. Maybe it was meant to be taken as a joke, but he believes that it’s something a lot of people should start to follow and accept as normalcy, as he told WDBJ7.

“I decided because I need to solve all the injustices of the world to start charging more for people who didn’t take the time to say hello and connect and realize we’re all people behind the counter.”

Byrd did say that the joke message on the sign has gone over quite well with customers and it has actually caused them to be more polite. Even though they won’t be charged more if they simply say “Small coffee,” it has had everyone become a bit more personable.

She may say it was meant as “a joke,” but her sign has gone viral and is even being talked about in England. Maybe she says it was meant in jest in public, but the coffee shop may have had a greater goal in mind when coming up with the message.

CUPS Coffee & Tea isn’t trying to discriminate against anyone and they aren’t trying to force people to do what they don’t want to do. All they’re doing is delivering a message of kindness and rewarding those that show it back to them. No-one is being refused service for doing what they want, but they are being charged a little bit more for their cups of coffee. Saying “please” and “thank you” will only take a few extra seconds and keep your wallet a bit heavier.
