‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Spoilers: Greg Nicotero Explains Saviors

The Walking Dead Season 7 is going to be all out war between the core group at Alexandria and Negan’s Saviors. Now, as fans may already know, Negan is considered the bad guy in this group, but if The Walking Dead TV show had been following Negan and the Saviors from the beginning and the story plays out all the same, they might not have been seen the way they are now.

In an interview with Greg Nicotero on Entertainment Weekly, the Walking Dead executive producer and special effects guru gave TWD fans some insight into who the Saviors are and why they are so successful with their campaigns that seem so cruel and sadistic. It is probably one of the most important commentaries that you can read for Season 7 of The Walking Dead.

What is immediately clear for Season 7 of The Walking Dead is that the saviors are not the small group that they seemed to be way back in the second half of Season 6. That was about the time that The Walking Dead fans got a more in depth look at Carol’s truly menacing character, and how she has evolved into a fighting machine that can take out just as many humans as walkers.

“It’s the mystery and the word-of-mouth that has spread along the countryside about these people (the Saviors), because that’s just as much a character point as it is meeting these guys, is hearing about them,” Greg Nicotero told EW. “‘Oh I heard there’s this guy Negan and you got to give him half your stuff or he kills somebody just to prove his point.’ You know, I think that is as interesting as actually seeing the inner workings of how these places exist.”

But to have word of mouth in The Walking Dead pales in comparison to actual actions, which appears to be what Negan and the Saviors are all about. But what Greg Nicotero just said also has exposed one of the biggest spoilers for Season 7 of The Walking Dead.

“Give him half your stuff.”

That alone tells fans just about everything they need to know about the Season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead. The cliffhanger was who Negan killed, but the real question should have been why Negan didn’t kill all of them? Greg Nicotero just answered that question for you. In this post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies, Negan is an alpha in a group that is hell bent on doing more than just surviving. As most The Walking Dead fans may have figured out, there is a vacancy in the government and the world needs a new leader. So Negan sees himself filling that role and having all of his needs supplied and tended to by harshly policing the surrounding communities, which means he needs the core Walking Dead group to live on and provide for the Saviors.

“The Saviors, as sadistic as they may appear, they have a system that works for them. Yeah, they’re f***ed up and they’re a little weird, but they’ve been doing this for a long time and they have a very large group.,” Greg Nicotero told EW. “It’s not like it’s a pocket of 10 or 12 people. They have a good thing going and the most interesting thing about them for me is there’s mythos involved with them. It’s like, you hear about this guy Negan, just like you hear about this guy Rick, and you hear about these people. There’s a lot of that involved in Season 7.”

So, fans of The Walking Dead should be asking themselves just what they are ready to see more of in Season 7? Do you want to know who Negan killed or do you want to see just how bad the Saviors are and what they will do to our core Walking Dead group in the event that they don’t get what they want?
