Matt Damon: Jason Bourne Is Better Than James Bond, David Webb Would Beat British Secret Agent In A Fight

In the shadowy world of Hollywood espionage movies Jason Bourne is better than James Bond, at least according to actor Matt Damon who stars in the fifth installment of the franchise due out later this month.

Damon was brutally honest with GQ Australia when he discussed his role in the upcoming Jason Bourne movie, and how his modern spy character would compare with the famous British secret agent.

“I like Bourne better than Bond. Bourne would obviously win in a fight.”

While David Webb a.k.a. Jason Bourne isn’t the most social of characters, the modern super spy is more grounded in today’s world than the British secret agent, Damon told GQ Australia.

“Bourne has today’s values; Bond has the values of the 1960’s. Daniel’s Bond has upgraded him and brought him more into the present, but, classically, that character is a misogynist who likes swilling martinis and killing people and not giving a shit.”

Britain’s most famous secret agent is also limited by his reliance on fancy gadgets although fans generally agree 007 looks better in a tuxedo.

Damon has been bashing Bond since 2007, when he called the British secret agent a misogynist stuck in the 1960s who does nothing but drink Martinis and crack jokes all day, according to GQ Australia.

“Jason Bourne is a serial monogamist, and he’s tortured by the things he’s done and feels empathy and compassion for other people.”

Daniel Craig agreed with Damon on 007’s personality when he spoke with Red Bulletin in 2015 as he was promoting Spectre.

Before you jump on Damon for his preference in super spies, remember that many critics credit the Bourne franchise for reinvigorating the James Bond reboot. Many Hollywood critics considered 007 dead after the poor reception of Pierce Brosnan’s Die Another Day.

It was Damon’s gritty Bourne character that eventually led to Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond. Now, with Craig stepping away from the 007 role, it will be up to future British secret agents to carry on the famous name.

Damon has been working hard on the fifth installment of the Jason Bourne franchise alongside Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel, and Oscar award winner Alicia Vikander.

In the upcoming film due out June 29, David Webb a.k.a. Jason Bourne struggles with his past and the truth about his identity, according to GQ Australia.

“This time, we’re in a post-financial crash and postmodern world with the refugee crisis, so we start at the Macedonia-Greece border and go into Athens for an austerity riot, then through London and we end up in the sewer beneath Las Vegas, kind of fighting to the death and rolling around in the detritus of modern-day capitalism.”

Damon is currently out and about promoting his fourth appearance in the fifth installment of the Bourne franchise, and he was recently in France with his wife, Luciana Barroso, at the Paris premiere of the eagerly anticipated movie.

Matt recently told the Irish Examiner he’d be willing to play a superhero if his friend Ben Affleck were directing, but that probably won’t happen. Whenever Affleck directs a movie, he grabs the best character for himself, so the chances of the two teaming up for a caped crusader movie aren’t good. Damon and Affleck worked together in the 1997 Oscar award-winning movie, Good Will Hunting.

“I’d consider anything with the right director, but I can’t imagine there are any superheroes left.”

While speaking about his possible upcoming movie roles, Damon said he wouldn’t be willing to play James Bond because that actor should come from Britain.
