‘Brave Little Toaster’ Gets The Remake Treatment Courtesy Of ‘Chipmunks’ Producers

Director Jerry Rees’ Brave Little Toaster, a 1987 animated feature that developed a strong cult following on home video, is the next children’s property to get the remake treatment. According to The Wrap, the same individuals responsible for bringing Alvin and the Chipmunks to a new generation are reportedly behind the project, a fact which may not settle too well with fans of the original feature.

Waterman Entertainment, the company which also produced Casper and Stuart Little, will work their magic on The Brave Little Toaster in such the same way they have their previous efforts. Instead of an animated retelling of the story, producers are going with a CGI/live-action hybrid.

Not content with rebooting this 80s classic, Waterman is also looking to acquire even more family-oriented properties in hopes of transforming them into box office hits. “Waterman has raised a development fund to acquire, option and develop well-recognized family properties and brands that adhere to specific elements that we deem suitable to create CGI/live action hybrid films with potential for licensing and merchandising,” Tucker Waterman explained to The Wrap.

“We are increasing the amount of acquisitions as well as the number of films we intend to produce in the coming years,” he added. “The company will also act as a rights-management company, focused on the exploitation of each property on multiple platforms in addition to and in coordination with the films.”

For those who didn’t grow up in the 80s, The Brave Little Toaster follows the adventures of a vacuum cleaner, lamp, radio, blanket, and, yes, a toaster as they attempt to find the owner who left them behind. Although the premise sounds a little goofy, the movie is surprisingly emotional and heartfelt. According to Screen Rant, the film is based on author Thomas M. Disch’s novella The Brave Little Toaster: A Bedtime Story for Small Appliances.
