Amnesia: The Dark Descent Sales Surpass 1 Million; Developer Teases “Super Secret” Project
It’s been over a year now since indie developer Frictional Games’ terrifying first-person horror title Amnesia: The Dark Descent was unleashed on the world of PC gaming, and it sounds like sales are still going strong.
In a recent blog post, Frictional Games designer Thomas Grip revealed that sales of Amnesia: The Dark Descent have surpassed the one million milestone. Determining the exact number of sales is a bit tricky, however.
Grip explains that Amnesia has moved a bit over 700,000 units by itself but, as you may recall, the first-person horror title was also available in the 5th iteration of the Humble Indie Bundle. Taking into account people that may have previously owned Amnesia, Grip says that sales could be closer to 1.5 million although he admits that may be a bit optimistic.
“Despite that huge number of sales, what I think is more interesting is how good the monthly sales still are. Not counting any discounts, the monthly full price sales lie at over 10,000 units,” Grip said in the blog post (via Joystiq).
“This is totally insane to me. The figures themselves are far beyond any guesses we would have made two years ago. It is also insane, because this number is actually higher than it was around three months after initial launch. That a game can still be going this good two years after is truly remarkable.”
A sequel to the horror hit, dubbed Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, is currently in development by fellow indie developer thechineseroom, with Frictional taking on the role of producer. They’ve also got a first-person horror title of their own in development, Grip revealed.
“One of the things I was most disappointed with in Amnesia was that it never really managed to deliver any deeper themes, but was more like a shallow fright-fest,” Grip said. “For the new project we want to change that and really try and bring a certain theme to the front. Our hope is that this will create a very special experience, creating horror in a much more disturbing way.”
