Pat Robertson Jokes About Wife Beating On ‘700 Club’ [Video]

Pat Robertson was asked a tough question today on The 700 Club; What should a man do when his wife won’t listen to him? The answer, according to Robertson, is quite simple: He should move to Saudi Arabia, become a Muslim, and then beat her.

Robertson said:

“Well you could become a Muslim so you could beat her. He can’t divorce her according to the Scripture, so I say: move to Saudi Arabia.”

Robertson waits for some laughter but when it doesn’t come, and when his co-hosts asks for an alternative to physical violence, Robertson continued:

“This man’s got to stand up to her and he can’t let her get away with this stuff…. I don’t think we condone wife-beating these days but something has got to be done.”

Robertson then goes on to describe the woman, who he’s never met, as a rebellious child who used to throw temper tantrums and yell at her father.

Pat Robertson campaigned with Mitt Romney over the weekend but the GOP candidate may want to start distancing himself from the televangelist. The GOP has received criticism from women’s rights groups over their stances on issues like abortion.

The Romney campaign hasn’t issued a statement about Robertson’s comments but I think it’s safe to say that the GOP candidate doesn’t condone wife beating.
