July PS Plus Brings Free ‘Saints Row: Gat Out Of Hell’ And ‘Paragon’ Starter Pack

Sony announced the free games line-up Wednesday for PS Plus in July, 2016. PlayStation 4 owners can look forward to a Saints Row IV spin-off title, a stylish indie action title, plus a bonus Starter Pack off for the free-to-play MOBA, Paragon. Meanwhile, PS3 and PS Vita owners receive a little love, as well.

The July line-up of PS Plus games will land on Tuesday, July 5, when the PlayStation Store is updated. It features Saints Row: Gat out of Hell and Furi for the PS4. PS3 owners will receive Fat Princess and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. Finally, the PS Vita will have Prince of Persia: Revelation and Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines as a free download option.

Note that the games offered as part of the June PS Plus line-up – NBA 2K16 and Gone Home for the PS4, Echochrome and Sire: Blood Curse for the PS3, Little Deviants and God of War: Chains of Olympus for the PS Vita – will be available to purchase from the PS Store at no cost until then.

The PS4 release of Saints Row IV: Gat out of Hell originally included the Saints Row: Re-Elected remaster. This does not appear to be the case with the free PS Plus offering as players will get the spin-off as a stand-alone title. Gat out of Hell was released in January, 2015, to mixed reviews across all platforms. The over the top action and trademark Saints Row humor are there, but the amount of content included was considered to be slim. The HD remastering of the game was also knocked to earn it a 66 Metacritic score.

Little is known about Furi at the moment. The game is a new entry from indie studio The Game Breakers and promises a game “that is both simple and deep.”

Furi is a fast-paced, intense, and ultimately rewarding gameplay experience. While play mechanics allow for an easy approachability, the depth comes from the ways with which you use those skills to take on unique opponents. Furi pits you against guardians, each with his own style, in what feels more like carefully crafted duels than boss fights.

Meanwhile, Epic Games is enticing PlayStation 4 owners to try out its third-person MOBA, Paragon. PS Plus members get early access to the game prior to its open beta launch on August 16 along with a free Starter Pack. The pack comes with skins, boosts, emotes, plus three Master Challenges for the characters Gadget, Murdock, and Rampage.

For those unfamiliar with Paragon, it is a MOBA done in a similar style to SMITE with an over-the-shoulder camera and a more action-game feel. It comes with a few twists of its own, such as the ability to collect and build card decks to provide boosts during matches. Additionally, all characters released for the game are completely free. The free-to-play micro-transaction model is primarily used on skins and other cosmetic items not meant to affect gameplay. Experience boosters are available, however.

The graphics in Paragon are top-notch with the use of Unreal Engine 4 and could be considered worth a try for that alone even if you aren’t a fan of the MOBA genre.

As a reminder, the free PS4, PS3, and PS Vita games only come with a subscription to PlayStation Plus. A 12-month subscription costs $50, but can be found for less through deals available at various retailers. Monthly subscription options are available as well. Note that the free games downloaded from PlayStation Plus are available to play as long as the PS Plus subscription is active.
