Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Olympic Edition May Be Coming

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is the hottest smartphone of the year (both in terms of sales and critical acclaim), and there may soon be a new Olympics edition arriving soon. CNET has the news.

“Rumor has it that Samsung will release an exclusive version of the Galaxy S7 Edge for the 2016 Rio Olympics. This wouldn’t be a huge surprise coming from a sponsor that has already released an emotional ad about the Olympic Games.”

The article notes that although the S7 Edge Olympic Edition was initially reported three months ago, a newly leaked photo from Evan Blass has surfaced and has given new birth to the rumor. The alleged new Olympics edition has caused a lot of hype on Twitter.

Many different websites are reporting that Samsung will soon release Olympic-themed apps for the Gear VR virtual reality headset, which uses the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge as its screen. Some have hoped that Samsung would do a virtual reality broadcast live from the Olympics, but others have noted that the technology isn’t really that powerful just yet.

The Olympics edition wouldn’t be the first specially designed Galaxy S7 Edge. Samsung has put out a limited number of Galaxy S7 Edge Batman Injustice Edition smartphones. The Verge says the Injustice Edition of the S7 Edge is both absurd and awesome at the same time.

“Let me be perfectly clear: there is nothing special about the S7 Edge Injustice Edition in terms of hardware features or capabilities…But the Injustice Edition (which should really just be called the Batman phone, but isn’t) has a blacked-out color scheme with gold highlights and a Batman batarang symbol on the back where the carrier logo usually is.”

Columnist Dan Seifert goes on to say that the new design makes the S7 Edge look “absolutely dope.” Many commenters after the article would give their hard-earned dollars for one of these right now.

“Just..take my money,” says VirusKA

“That thing sure is a beauty,” says Anotherverge.

Meanwhile, the 2017 version of the Galaxy S8 may not even need an “edge” as it could be foldable and bendable, according to Bloomberg.

“Samsung Electronics Co. is considering introducing two new smartphone models that will feature bendable screens, including a version that folds in half like a cosmetic compact, people familiar with the matter said. The devices using organic light-emitting diodes could be unveiled as soon as early 2017, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.”

The article adds that there will be a second Samsung model that will have a five-inch screen when used as a handset. However, it unfolds into a display that’s as large as eight inches, which is similar to a tablet. It’s not known for sure if this will be a variant of the Galaxy S series, but it’s likely since the Galaxy S is Samsung’s flagship device, and rumors of it becoming foldable and bendable have been happening for years.

Many people feel that Samsung has once taken back control of the smartphone industry, which they had in 2012 with the Galaxy S3. According to Tech Times, the Galaxy Note 7, which will have a curved display, will be out in August. However, we should see the Galaxy S7 Edge Olympics Edition out before that.
